Magical Express Shuttle ?

We want to use the Magical Express to have our bags sent directly to our rooms. However, we also want to visit a couple non-Disney places the day we arrive. Do we have to use the shuttle when we arrive, or can we take a cab the first day and still have our bags sent to our room?
