I am still waitlisted for my first night. If I have to stay elswhere my first night is it possible to have ME take my luggage straight to AK even though I wouldn't be checking in there until the next day? Will they hold it overnight?

I think they will match the DME tags to where ever (on Disney property) you are staying your first night. You will verify that information when you check in for DME. If you are staying at another WDW resort on arrival day, they will move your luggage for you to AKL when you checkout of that resort.

The DME itinerary is based on your actual reservation. If you are staying at GF the day you arrive, your bags will be delivered to your room at that resort. You can then arrange for the Bell Staff at GF to store and deliver your luggage to AKL the next day.

If you are staying off-site on your first day, you won't be able to use DME that day at all. They may still allow the return trip from AKL to MCO though.
