Magical Express - Not So Magical For Me

Just returned home from a short weekend trip and used DME.

First, I reserved months ago and although I was in their system, called twice to check, I never did receive my luggage tags.

Flew on SWA and didn't bother to check any bags. Landed 15 minutes earlier - 2:05 p.m. on Friday.

Proceeded to check in desk on lower level. Many people in line, saw that a majority of the guests did have their DME boarding information. No problem with checking in even though I never received package. Had to ask for a voucher for the free lanyard and pin.

Boarded the bus at 2:30 p.m. Sat on the bus for a good 20 to 30 minutes. We were staying at Saratoga Springs. Bus departed MCO by 3:00 p.m., first stop was Yacht Club, second stop was Old Key West, and final stop was Saratoga Springs. After pulling out of OKW, a passenger asked the driver if he was going to the Beach Club since that was where he was staying! Driver told him he would bring him there after his stop at SSR. Finally arrived at 4:30 p.m. at SSR - so much for our flight arriving early! The whole time on the bus I was having flashbacks of the one time I did travel via motorcoach on Mears and got a full tour of quite a few Disney resorts before being delivered to my resort.

Our pick up time today was for 1:45 p.m. and our flight was at 4:40 p.m., so we were picked up 3 hours before our flight. Bus was right on time, and almost all the seats were taken. Driver asked a few families to free up some extra seats that had bags/packages on them for the guests getting on. Don't know where everyone else was picked up from, but a couple families were complaining about the number of stops they had made since they were picked up. In fact, once the driver was ready to depart, he announced that our next stop was MCO and apologized to the passengers for the stops. He even said that this is the way Disney wants it, so he was just doing what he was suppose to do.

I have read reports for others here that have had good experiences, so it's not all bad reports. All in all, I'm glad I tried it once. Heck, what do you want for free? I'm not sure if I'm willing to go through it again when I go back in August with my family of 6 people. I'm going to price out a rental car for a few days or a car service. This way, we can do a grocery stop. We did use We Go Shop service for some groceries this past weekend, but that was another whole story, which I will report on under the Budget Board section, and that experience was also not very magical!

Feel free to ask any questions.

I'm sorry for what ME/Mears did to the begining and end of your vacation (btw - regardless of "how disney wants it", the operator, Mears would have rung you through the same gauntlet). I feel the whole Disney vacation experience should be "magic" from the moment you leave your house to the moment you unlock it when you return home, hence why from now on I'll either rent or have a private limo/van transport my family. Thanks for the report! :)

What do you think about using private transportation for the family and letting DME take care of the luggage?

OP's experience: I would give it a B grade. By the way, did the bus sit somewhere in WDW in order to consume 90 minutes to the third stop (SSR)?

Technically not allowed.

But some guests may start following the ME check in procedure, see a line that looked too long, and chicken out and get a town car. THe baggage will still be delivered.

Except if the guest had not gone far enough into the ME check in procedure to get a bus pass, in the event luggage is lost, the guest would not be able to complain at the resort.

Like I said in my original post, we sat on the bus for 20 to 30 minutes before departing MCO. The bus already had quite a few people on it when we boarded and the cast member who directed us to the bus said we were just in time. We thought the bus was ready to depart. Wrong. We sat on the bus waiting and a few more people did board. The check in desk line was long, so maybe they were expecting a bunch of people going to the same resorts to all arrive at the same time so they were waiting a bit for everyone to get on board. While we waited, our driver helped a DCL bus driver who had just pulled in with a busload unload the passengers' luggage.

In addition to the sit and wait time, our driver was not the fastest driver. We stopped first at Yacht Club, next OKW where the driver pulled in to drop off and couldn't swing the bus around the circular driveway. It took several minutes of backing up and going forward to get the bus out. Also noticed the parking guard at the front gate shaking his head at the driver as we pulled in to OKW so maybe the driver didn't use the proper entrance and that was why we had trouble getting the bus out.

Since SSR was the last stop, it did indeed take us over 90 minutes to get from MCO to SSR.

Sorry you were not happy with your experience. It really does not sound too bad to me. If I had to sit on a bus for 30 minutes, I would use that time to relax and enjoy the fact that I am not at work. I would also use that time to get my camera ready, get my hotel documents together, etc. Different strokes for different folks I suppose.

Bytheblood - It wasn't the 30 minute sit and wait that bothered me. It was the fact that the whole experience took 2 hours to get from MCO to SSR. Even the bellman said we could have driven to Jacksonville in that time and that made me think, Hey, I could have driven from my home in CT to my sister's in NY in 2 hrs! The ride back from SSR to MCO only took 35 minutes!

Thanks for the info. I never would have guessed. Seems to me that luggage and people can be handled separately. But what do I know :rolleyes1
I hope to read more about this. May make me decide that ME isn't the way to go...Hopefully, things will improve. :cheer2:
