Magical Express, Large Group- Should we tip?

I don't disagree with you. But "appropriate" is what is in debate. I don't think anyone would NOT appreciate a tip. Is it an insult to tip a DME driver? Absolutely not. But I'm guessing it's also not an insult to tip the QS server, or the CM at the gift shop. They probably don't make more the than driver. So why would it be appropriate to tip the driver and not the QS server or the CM at the gift shop?
Because tipping a driver or a baggage handler is customary, whereas the others are not.

If he handles any bags I would tip appropriately. I also tip for extra friendly service - some ME drivers are a lot of fun. But I probably wouldn’t tip just because of your group. 99% of the time I only tip for the driver putting my walker under the bus and getting it out for me (one tip at the end).

I know this is sort of tongue-in-cheek, but my high school students are actually really well-behaved and respectful humans.
I think your idea of $40 is nice. Any reason this can’t also be a learning experience where the HS students learn about tipping for luggage services & also each provide the driver $1 or 2 when the driver retrieves their carry on?
That said, my last couple of trips on DME the carry on I had fit in the bus overhead bin.

Actually, that's not a bad idea.
