My DS's and DH really want to go and I am having a heck of time getting any info about this place. I hear they have really great roolercoasters, but it is quite a ways away form DL. We are not planning on a car rental, but might get one for the day to get and forth to MM. How far? How much time should I expect it to take to get there and back? and how long will we need there? is one day enough? Anybody know of ticket discounts? We are going to be in CA from 12/16-12/23.

Thanks for any info anyone's got!

MM is about an hour away from Disneyland without traffic (which is rare). It depends on what day you're planning on going. If there is traffic, I'd plan on more time although after you pass through downtown LA you're going the opposite way of rush hour traffic.

Here is the link to MM web site: http://www.sixflags.com/parks/magicmountain/index.asp

They have a lot of big rollercoasters but that is about it. Not much shows or parades. They did have a Batman show that was good but I'm not sure if it is still going or not.

I'd keep checking their site for specials. They usually have something around christmas where you bring a coke and a $10 and you get in free.

MM has the most coasters in the West, and some of the best in my opinion. One day is usually enough, but you may not get to ride everything. During the holidays the lines will be pretty long, up to 2 hours for the big rides.

The drive from DL usually takes us 1 hr 15 min, but we leave early on a Sat or Sun in order to be a MM at opening which is almost always 10am. I think there may be some bus trips from many of the Anaheim hotels, but I don't know anything about them. We usually have a car.

MM Is awesome!!! We love going there but it is quite a drive from Anaheim! Also the hours are shorter that time they are only open from 10 until 6 so I'd make sure you got there right as it opens! We've gone there but we always get a room so we can get there early and then we drive back after we are finished for the day.
Another thing to remember is it's not like Disney and their fastpass thing...you can buy fast lane passes at MM but they are pretty pricey and you only get 4 tickets I believe. They were 17 for 4 tickets so if you have 4 people you can all go to the front of 1 line and then you're done. It's a pretty big rip off unless there is a coaster that you just have to get on!

We've waited in LONG lines at MM...upwards of 2 2 1/2 hours so be prepared! It is also crawling with teenagers (some of which are really really rude) so be prepared for that as well!!!

If you can handle all of that it is a really fun coaster park!!!

My DD(22) also really, really wants to go to MM but the only other person in our family who might want to go is DS(25). DS(13) and I hate roller coasters, except the Disney ones  and DH can take them or leave them. It would be great if there was reasonable transportation from the DL Hotel to MM for the 2 of them (don't want them taking the rental car :o) while the rest of us hang out at the resort. Does anyone know if this is available?

I haven't heard of any shuttles going from Disneyland to Magic Mountain. I really think your best bet is to rent a car.

My kids love Magic Mountain. It really has fantastic rollercoasters there. I've been there so many times, that now I'll just go if we have family from out of town.

We live very near MM. It really has some great coasters  it also has some horrible food. There are some non coaster rides. It is very spread out and very hilly. One word of caution, if you decide to go be sure to check their hours. Unlike DL , MM is not open every day. During the off season they are only open on weekends. You will probally be ok for the dates of your stay but I'm not sure when they will start holiday hours.

If you can't work that out your older two could always do Knott's. Knott's has some good coasters, including a brand new one. There are always deals for Knotts! I know they did have a half price after 4 special for awhile, I'm not sure if they still do. There's defintely not as many coasters as MM, but Ghostrider is AWESOME, Excelarator is HUGE and the new one Silver Bullet has gotten some good reviews. There's a couple more, plus a ride like Maliboomer(that's wayyy bigger)that the older kids may enjoy

Thanks for the tip. We are planning to get the SCal City Passes which include Knotts, so I tried to talk her into that. She was going along with it but I had a sense that she still really wanted to do MM, originally that was the reason we started planning this trip last year. So after getting her to admit how much she wanted to go, I have revised my plans and DH has agreed to drive them. We will still go to Knotts also, and they can go to MM on the day I had set aside as a "rest day". DS(13) and I will be happy to stay and sleep in, swim in the Neverland Pool, play at the arcade and ESPN Zone, explore Downtown Disney and the DLH, and do a couple loads of laundry (quote from DH,"You mean I'm going to miss doing laundry?!).
