Magic Kingdom Park Opening

Does anyone know how they choose the family that rides the train to help the characters open the Magic Kingdom?
Can this be arranged in advance, or is it just a random picked family from the crowd?

It is totally random. They pick the family out of the morning crowd at the turnstiles.

I am not familar with this opening? Can you please provide more information? Perhaps it's because I sleep in too much on vacation. lol

The opening cerimony begins at 8:45 on all days except Early Entry Days. At that time, a number of Main Street dancers come out and do a dance number at the Railroad Station. Then the Mayor of Main Street or one of the other streetmosphere characters says a little speach and the train pulls into the station filled with a variety of Disney characters. Then the park opens and guests enter the park into Town Square where the characters who were on the train greet guests.

Out of all the trips we have taken we had never gotten there early enough to see it even though that was top on our list to see. Well this last trip our friend was performing in it so we made sure we were up and out in time. It starts about 10-15 minutes before the park is scheduled to open. The Main Street performers dance and all or at least lots of the characters come in on the train. They get off the train and dance. Mickey welcomes everyone and opens the Magic Kingdom. It's the perfect start to a magic day!
