Magic Key sales back on 1/22!

lol, I told my wife that if they opened up while we were visiting this weekend I would consider it a sign we should upgrade in-park. Looks like it will be 3 days too late.

The same thing happened to me when I visited in early November...they opened sales just after we got home. It was really annoying! Lol but totally my luck.

Wow, that was quick.

Maybe they’ll start charging a nominal tiered fee of $25 - $75 for each reservation and we’ll hear people defend it as a great value :).
Wouldn't the more likely scenario be that people will claim Disney has finally gone too far and threaten to stop going? Then 5 minutes later reconsider and buy the latest no blackout $10,000 magic key?

You're not to late. If you add a day to your tickets and you don't use that day, the ticket will still be valid on 1/22. Then when they become available use the app to upgrade the tickets to a MK. At least I think this should work, right?

I think you need to be in the park to do that.

According to this, it seems like it might work (emphasis mine):

Eligible Disneyland Resort theme park tickets may be upgraded by following these simple steps via the Disneyland app:
  • Visit the Tickets and Passes screen. If not linked already, link your ticket to your MyDisney account.
  • Once linked, select the ticket(s) you would like to upgrade to a Magic Key pass.
  • One-day tickets – upgrade by midnight on the day of your visit to the Disneyland Resort.
  • Multi-day tickets – upgrade by midnight on or before the last valid day of your ticket.

What are the odds that another reasonable window will open up before July to buy MKs? I don't need an MK until mid-July but we definitely need to have one by July. Trying to rotate or APs between WDW and DLR and we'll have at least 5 or 6 trips to DLR this cycle.....

May just give in and give Disney the interest on the funds to make sure we get them.

Well that’s the smartest thing to do - buy now and activate later. Everybody should finance the ML, and the interest lost on 5 months is insignificant.

Nobody knows how long or if they’ll be offered again. Last year, they were offered for about a day in early January, were paused until March - but all but the SoCal only key lasted until June. They were sold one last time for a week in November.

IMO, Disney is using FOMO to max out MK sales, and I’d bet we’d see them on sale again later this year. But who knows when.

We plan to get one for the wife and kids and they won’t activate until August.

Some questions:
  1. Can I update my existing 3-day 1 park per day ticket (visiting 1/31 to 2/1) via the app?
  2. Do existing reservations made via my 3-day ticket mentioned above carry over to the Magic Key? The three days I'm visiting shows there aren't any MK reservations available. (dates are not blacked out, just no reservations). I don't want to cancel my 3-day ticket/reservations if I won't be able to get in with the new MK.
  3. Does staying on Disney property help MK holders get reservations on full days like it does with regular tickets?

Haven't done this in a bit but in the past this has worked for us when staying on property with our DVC points. MK calendar was full but when we went through the reservation portal there was much more availability (usually even for as close as 24 hours ahead of time).

1. Maybe/probably. It's always a gamble as far as how long MKs will be available, and I think most of us are loathe to guess as to what might happen this time. Some people have tried this in the past and missed out - so it depends on your threshold for potentially missing out.

If you're not a frequent visitor but were eager to get an MK, I would consider getting the pass prior to your trip and use your existing ticket. The MK won't activate until you enter the park with it - just save it for the next visit.

2. Historically, no. The general recommendation has been to upgrade at the end of your trip.

Seems like you're being punished (no discounts, no park hopper, etc.) by waiting to upgrade at the end of your trip. I understand missing out on those things if you chose to wait to buy, but MK's weren't available when I booked or I would have bought them at that time.

I'll call Disney Travel on Tuesday to see if I upgrade my ticket, if my existing reservation will be valid and/or if they have availability to get me in since I'll be staying on-site.

With 4-5 trips planned this year, a MK makes the most sense for me, it just wasn't available when I booked the first trip. :/
