Magic key reservation calendar

I am hoping if some on here buy their keys today or in the next few days they can let the rest of us know how to access the reservation calendar. I am hoping you don't have to have the actual key first to see it. We have a real dilemma because we have 5 day hoppers and my older daughter only has a 3 day. We just found out last minute that she doesn't have to work those 2 extra days so she is now going to go with us. She was planning up upgrading her hopper to a key on her last day no matter what but it would sure be nice to see before she buys it if those next 2 days are available.

Just want to point out that the reservation availability for non-AP buckets has been fluctuating greatly. 1 park now gets access to Disneyland today again, park hoppers can now only start on DCA on Saturday and Hotel Guests have seriously limited availability for the weekend and start of next week.

My guess is that some people with tickets for today have upgraded to Magic Keys and some people have bought park hoppers for Saturday hoping to upgrade now that the Magic Key IT is proving to be as difficult as expected. Or, they are shuffling the reservation buckets around.

I figure I’ll post here instead of making a separate thread.

I don’t know what to make of the reservation calendar right now. I’m really surprised to see everything is still available for all ticket types. You would think former pass holders who have been away from the parks for a year and a half would be chomping at the bit to go the first days that the parks are open to them but here we are a day after passes went on sale and everything is wide open.

It’s really confusing because given the long queues yesterday to order you would think hundreds of thousands of people were processing, but if that were the case why aren’t they reserving? And if that’s not the case why the queues?

It’s giving me a false sense of hope that Saturday won’t be a crowded mess.

I thought it was surprising that every day was open, too, when comparing to when I had a FlexPass. Of course it's a different situation now in that anyone who goes to the park needs a reservation.

I think the hurry to buy was partially because there was some fake news about each Key type being limited in quantity and because anyone who buys in the first 66 days has gets a free pin and something. Even though I am not planning on going right away, I bought right away so I would be ready for a spontaneous visit if I get an urge to go to DL the next day. I have enough cash back on my credit card to cover the down payment and the pass doesn't start until I actually go. At any rate, I did book 4 reservations already.

So, I am surprised there isn't at least a Saturday or two gone.

But if you think about it…
1. This is traditionally a low-crowd time of year to begin with. (Having been at the parks on July 11 and then August 16 and 22, I can say that July had waaaaaaaay more people.) I think that's the main thing - there's plenty of potential capacity to work with.

2. Demand is spread out. A lot of new passholders visited yesterday… or are there today… or tomorrow… or Sunday… it’s not like anything particularly cool is happening on any one day. This is kind of like when park reservations went live back in April - Opening Day and June 4 (AC opening) “sold out” before toooo long, but otherwise demand was more spread out.

3. Disney is pretty incentivized to make the passes look good, so I'm sure they're offering as many reservations as possible right now.

4. A lot of people are wait-and-seeing on the passes. They want to check out how things go with reservations. They want to see how Genie+ affects things. I know a lot of locals who had bought the 3-day CA tickets and still have a day or two left, so they're using those, maybe they have an OBB, and they figure by then, they'll be able to see how things are going and maybe buy a pass.

What's frustrating to me is that I NEED a ticket for my daughter who at the 11th hour is able to extend her trip. My youngest and I have 5 day hoppers and worst case we can't upgrade till the last day and just don't get the discount but I just wish they would let those of us with tickets upgrade NOW instead of waiting till we are IN the park. I am going NEXT week and she needs tickets for 2 days. I am hoping and praying that logic says that the tues and wed after labor day will be open. That weekend or esp labor day may get full and if that is the case she will have to wait till we are in the parks on Monday to try and upgrade but the not knowing is driving me nuts. I don't want her to be there and then not be able to go. Plus I hope they get all the glitches worked out on the app because we won't have access to a computer and I don't want to waste tons of precious park time trying to figure it out on the app!

...Hotel Guests have seriously limited availability for the weekend and start of next week...

I'm sure the following question has been asked and answered numerous times in this forum, but since I can't find the answer anywhere I'll ask again.

Taking Saturday August 28th as an example, there is availability for single park tickets, park hoppers, and annual passes, but NO availability available for Disney Hotel Guests. What does this mean exactly? Clearly, if a hotel guest wants to enter a park on Saturday, they must have a ticket, so they should be able to get into a park even though the hotel guest bucket is empty.

Are there times where the single park, park hopper, and annual pass reservation buckets are empty, but hotel guests can still make reservations using whatever type of ticket they have (whether a single park, park hopper, or annual pass)???

I don't know this for sure, but it was reported somewhere on this forum that Hotel guests are able to access whichever bucket may still have availability, so if the hotel bucket is empty, they can still use the park ticket one (unless they don't have a ticket for that day). I believe that information came to a member of this board via a CM, but I don't know how reliable such information might be. It does make sense, though. They're not going to want hotel guests with tickets to be blocked out.

Thanks for the explanation. That is about the only way the hotel guest bucket makes any sense. My guess is that if there is any park availability whatsoever, a hotel guest can always get into a park, no matter the type of ticket the guest has. So, for example, if park hopper is the only bucket of the four which shows availability, a hotel guest with an annual pass could still make a park reservation.

I wish I knew for sure! I booked a package for Dec that included hoppers, but I just purchased an AP so only one of us still needs a hopper. I have already reserved our park days but once I activate the pass, I'll lose both the park reservations and our GCH package. You have to cancel and completely rebook the package (or so I was told by 2 CMs). While the hoppers give you a 120-day park reservation window, the AP only gives you 90. So I'm trying to figure out whether I rebook the whole thing now, or wait until we're within 90 days and see if we can still reserve the parks. Can I still book my sister's park reservations if I rebook now since she has a hopper? And then hope for the best for mine? It's a pain in the rear, to be honest.

This is exactly what I am doing lol. I am following along so I am up to date on what happens with passes and if genie+ comes out. But I am waiting to purchase. I have 2 days left on my resident ticket that I’ll use next month to see Halloween at the parks.

I don't think any of us know for sure, but that wasn't the case at WDW earlier in the year, when every day was booked up months in advance. You had to stick to your own ticket bucket. Oftentimes, more spots would become available in certain buckets. Again, I don't know that DL will handle it the same way, but I suspect they will.

@kelmac284 Can you upgrade the 3 day ticket on the last day for that one and then upgrade the other 2 tickets on their last day? It is a PIA for sure, but at least you would take advantage of the upgrade discount for each ticket..

MK reservations for Disneyland look to be gone for Saturday 8/28 but available for single day guests. So this confirms that MKs have their own reservation bucket. Which makes it very easy for Disney to put a limit on the days they would rather have more single day guests than MKs, even though some MKs have the top of line Dream option. Nice play Disney.

I think that was to be expected.

They sold a lot of Dream passes. Everyone I’ve seen on IG who does a poll gets more Dream responses than the other three combined. Granted, the “people following Disney accounts on IG” are a particular type of individual, but still. Lots of Dream holders.

ETA: I’m showing both parks available 8/28 for APs when I look. So either they moved more or people have cancelled.
