just curious, with the magic in drydock what does the crew do, get two weeks off, do they hang around locally or get to go home

the crew works their butts off during the drydock process! Unfortunately, they really don't get much time off...probably even less than when they're at sea.

Keep in mind the cruise job is a totally different thing from what land based job is. They contract for X number of months on board then they take a set amount of time off (Somthing around 6 months on/3 months off). Then they recontract on again. So yes, they do work thier butts off, but there is a good amount of downtime at some point. Not that that kind of life is easy, I'm sure it isn't.

if the ship is in drydock and there are no guests to look after what kind of jobs would everyone be assigned to do? a friend of mine said no one was allowed on the ship except for the construction type people, i had thought that since the crew already worked their butts off that maybe they got a chance to take a break at this time.

Our servers from the 8/21 Western stated that they were going home. One to Croatia and the other to Brazil. They weren't staying around for the dry dock.

We thought the crew (at least some like the servers for instance) would get some time off, but we were told they have to "detail" the ship. Some examples we were given by our waitstaff were cleaning the crevices of chairs, table legs, etc., cleaning fixtures, basically fine-tuning the area. I took that to mean the stateroom staff probably does the same except in the staterooms instead. However, they did add they will have more free time since taking care of passengers was an all-day/night job. Some of them were having family members join them during the time also. Bummer they're missing out on the tips during this time, though. ;)

We were talking with our serving team during our 8-23-03 cruise. Our server said he worked the last dry dock, and they worked very hard during those two weeks, he also told us that they were given a couple days off, and he went to visit the Washington, DC area. This dry dock, our server is home on his two month vacation.

Our assistant server said that she will be working on the ship during this dry dock, and she knows she will be very busy cleaning and working!!!

Our head server was leaving for his two month vacation the Saturday we disembarked.

I was on the last Magic cruise just prior to the last dry dock and our assistant server was scheduled to help count every piece of silverware on board the ship! Not my idea of fun.. :(

We're cruising October 11. Does this mean we should expect the crew to have no butts? Should we bring some extra safety pins to help hold their pants on? How will they sit exactly? If their butts are already worked off, will they have anything left to work off for us?

Maybe the spa has a Butt Regeneration package we could get for them.

Butt, butt, butt, butt, butt. Hasn't this thread raised any red flags yet?:D (There's probably a more fitting icon somewhere than a smilie face. I'll leave that to someone else.)

Since the crew quartes are "rumored" (and I fully believe them to be) to be quite cramped, maybe for these two weeks they get to spread out and live it up in the spacious guest rooms.

Maybe they would get a little privacy so everyone will stop stareing at their butt-less, butt-less, er ... butts:o

We also asked several crew members on the 9/20 Magic cruise what they would be doing during dry dock. One recited a long "honey do" list of the chores she was assigned. They were a lot like handyman chores, including stripping wallpaper. She seemed in good humor about her assigned tasks, and we joked about it adding to her resume.
