Oh, okay.
I've just never experienced or heard of them blocking off sections of any ship like that apart from when it was mentioned on here about them refurbishing the wonders cabins.
I get that it is a proportion of the ship, but there are inside cabins on a lot of decks!
Which old wires? And wouldn't they all have to run to a location on the ship for the signal?
Do you think they would run in the cabling for on demand TV as well if they did this and why they haven't already in the last dry dock?
I used to work pt for a company that specialized in WDW Resort rehabs. Happened to bump into an electrician that was at that particular resort same day wearing a DCL Magic Drydock hat or tshirt, and we started talking. He told me at the time, that hes been on the ships numerous times doing wiring upgrades while the ships were in service. Theyd have x amount of rooms to upgrade all of the wiring in. Then theyd move on to the next group. Someone else on the boards mentioned that one of the forward laundry rooms was off limits because it was behind a temporary wall, so I know its happened before. Realisitically, doing say 40 rooms a week it would only take about 5 weeks to rewire or run cabling for the portals. Even say 8 weeks.
As far as which wiring, all of the electrical wiring has to be replaced on a regular basis. Im not sure what the time frame is, but I would guess around 5-10 years or so, since I want to say it was 08 or 09 when I saw him and that would have put the MAgic at about 11 years old at the time.
In drydock it would be easier, as you can have crews work 24/7 to run the wiring and install the rest of the electrical components.
The signal itself, without knowing exactly how the portals work could be one of several ways.
1 A hardwire that comes from the cameras, and goes to an enhancer/booster, then split to however many rooms. That could be in any one of the tech rooms onboard. Ever walk down a hall and theres nothing but walls? And occasionally a door? Those are support areas for the ship. Everything from a/c to electronics to offices.
2. A multiplex system where the signal basically piggybacks another wire already in the rooms and goes to the portals. A lot of trucks use this to reduce wiring.
3. Wireless. They could easily put a wireless system in that runs to the portals.
Could they put in a on demand type tv sytem. Sure they could. It all depends on what DCLs thought process is. Im sure the tech is there to do a lot of things, but how much is DCL willing to do.
So far by all accounts, Freeport and Cadiz drydocks has caused more problems then what they solved. But DCL insists on going back.
