Magic Dry Dock 2015

Oh, okay.
I've just never experienced or heard of them blocking off sections of any ship like that apart from when it was mentioned on here about them refurbishing the wonders cabins.
I get that it is a proportion of the ship, but there are inside cabins on a lot of decks!
Which old wires? And wouldn't they all have to run to a location on the ship for the signal?
Do you think they would run in the cabling for on demand TV as well if they did this and why they haven't already in the last dry dock?

I used to work pt for a company that specialized in WDW Resort rehabs. Happened to bump into an electrician that was at that particular resort same day wearing a DCL Magic Drydock hat or tshirt, and we started talking. He told me at the time, that hes been on the ships numerous times doing wiring upgrades while the ships were in service. Theyd have x amount of rooms to upgrade all of the wiring in. Then theyd move on to the next group. Someone else on the boards mentioned that one of the forward laundry rooms was off limits because it was behind a temporary wall, so I know its happened before. Realisitically, doing say 40 rooms a week it would only take about 5 weeks to rewire or run cabling for the portals. Even say 8 weeks.

As far as which wiring, all of the electrical wiring has to be replaced on a regular basis. Im not sure what the time frame is, but I would guess around 5-10 years or so, since I want to say it was 08 or 09 when I saw him and that would have put the MAgic at about 11 years old at the time.

In drydock it would be easier, as you can have crews work 24/7 to run the wiring and install the rest of the electrical components.

The signal itself, without knowing exactly how the portals work could be one of several ways.
1 A hardwire that comes from the cameras, and goes to an enhancer/booster, then split to however many rooms. That could be in any one of the tech rooms onboard. Ever walk down a hall and theres nothing but walls? And occasionally a door? Those are support areas for the ship. Everything from a/c to electronics to offices.
2. A multiplex system where the signal basically piggybacks another wire already in the rooms and goes to the portals. A lot of trucks use this to reduce wiring.
3. Wireless. They could easily put a wireless system in that runs to the portals.

Could they put in a on demand type tv sytem. Sure they could. It all depends on what DCLs thought process is. Im sure the tech is there to do a lot of things, but how much is DCL willing to do.
So far by all accounts, Freeport and Cadiz drydocks has caused more problems then what they solved. But DCL insists on going back.

As far as a concierge lounge, is it rumored to be at the bow or stern of the ship?
Just off the transatlantic cruise and the concierge hosts had heard that a concierge lounge was going in the fake stack. Not sure how it would fit or what space it would replace.

The fake stack is currently Vibe.

It would be sad to see the Vibe closed but maybe they'll just close it at specific times? or maybe they are thinking of where the radio station bit is below the Vibe?

I thought I had read that when the Magic did the big dry dock that they already did the wiring for the virtual port holes. They were just going to activate them at a later date.

the Radio station on the magic is now the BBB. I sailed on the magic last month. I was told they are adding a lounge for concierge. they will be replacing the carpet in one of the restaurants. I can't remember which. Also the crew and all the servers and such remain on board. I was told they work harder in those 2 weeks than they ever have. Wishing now I would have asked more questions for you all. sorry. :)

I understand that the Anna and Elas's makeover was just set up in one of the shops from what i read.
Not a designated venue.

And I think they still have plumbing problems from what @truck1 has reported
When we were on the Magic in March, there was always sewer smells around the adult pool as well as some other parts of the ship. We didnt experience any sewer clogging that i am aware of but there is definitely some sewer issue going on.

Sorry, but was the radio studio already converted into Anna and Elsa's and just being rebranded as BBB?
That would make sense?

Sorry, Scott did post a picture of the newly branded BBB in his thread on his blog

Just off the last Med cruise of the season. The new and temporary BBB was closed. As someone else said its permanent location will go near the spa. Edge on deck 2 will be relocated to the arcade which is being permanently closed (and was closed on our cruise). Lots of carpet replacement as well as other general rehabs planned. No mention of virtual portholes but I didn't specifically ask. Merchandise being changed out and layout of stores redone (likely just merchandise layout).

We were on deck 2 and there was a definite damp smell in hallways and rooms. First time on a lower deck so not sure if that's usually the case.

Overall the ship was looking a bit tired. Chipped paint, dents, the usual wear and tear. I've only ever cruised the Wonder and while it doesn't have all the upgrades of the Magic, it definitely feels a bit more well maintained (structurally).

Looking forward to seeing the changes first hand when we return to the magic for the Norwegian fjords in late May.

The BBB will be at a different location than whee it currently is?? Intereating.

Please keep us posted. Especially about deck 2. We have our next cruise staterooms currently booked on deck 2. If it doesn't improve after this dry dock we will have to request to move to a different deck.

Thanks

Any idea what's happening to the "old" Edge space?

No mention was made of what would go in its place.

I tried to book my daughter an appointment and was told since this was the last cruise before dry dock the temporary location had been closed and they'd be putting in a full service BBB. It may be they are reusing the location but perhaps expanding. The first crewmember I asked actually sent me up to deck 10 and I wandered the entire deck looking for the BBB.

If you cruise after late May 2016 I'll run down to deck 2 and have a smell. We're on deck 6 for the next cruise. We were in 2124 which is directly below Cariocas I believe and each morning around 8-9:30 am the smell of garlic and other cooking odors actually woke us up. We called Guest Services but by the time they arrived the smell would of course start to fade. Others on our floor noticed the same smells.

There were also minor technical issues. Laundry on deck 2 was down for a few hours (couldn't process key cards) and I was told some on deck 2 lost power. They also had to pause one of the live shows due to technical difficulties. All worked out fine in the end and definitely just small things.

We are staying on deck 2 in 2 weeks! Our first time on deck 2 and in an inside room, hopefully the damp smell is gone or at least doesn't bother us. I am also hoping all the rehabs are finished. It would be great if there are virtual portholes but I am not holding my breath.

Please be sure to write a trip report afterward! Please! !

It took me awhile but I finally figured out the sewer smells. Basically its the P traps in the plumbing that are drying out, allowing the gas to back up in the system. All it takes is a little bit of water to refill the traps and the smell will dissipate. In the cabins, all you have to do is to take a glass of water and pour it into the drains in each bathroom and the smell will go away on its own.

hi. We just got off the Magic Sept 30 (Westbound Transatlantic) immed following the 2 week drydock. There were changes, yes. I booked my stateroom to be as close to the old Edge as possible, only to find the Edge had been relocated to Deck 9 (old Arcade location as has been mentioned), and 6 new staterooms were being constructed and installed in Edge's place on Deck 2 AFT. There were no portholes installed in the Inside Staterooms. Carpet was changed, most noticeably in the restaurant Carioca's on Deck 3 AFT to match the blue colour in the rest of the restaurant. BBB is lovely, and located on Deck 10 FWD. BBB had different offerings including 3 hairstyles for regular days, and separate styles and makeup for boys & girls on Pirate Day. BBB is open 9am-9pm.There were issues in staterooms regarding leaking but as Disney is known to be, these guests were quickly assisted and moved elsewhere for a comfortable cruise. I did notice some of the AC not functioning properly but that could only be because we were entering the Caribbean with very humid air compared to the rest of the cruise. The Concierge Lounge is lovely and well thought out. I am disappointed with the new Edge space. Being on Deck 9 I would have expected some windows to allow natural light into the club, but there is no light, only the same matted window in the door allowing very limited natural light in. The space itself is very small as many remember the Arcade's dimensions. The Edge's technology installed for the tweens could have been more updated and varied, following the Dream. My 11 yo DD did not visit the space more than twice in the 11 night cruise, rather changed to the Lab, and hoping Disney will improve this on our next voyage with them. Also, many are aware of the new policy as of Sept 30 for alcohol brought on board with limitations. The beverage machine was out of service on Deck 9 (1 of 3) during our cruise. For the first days 2 of 3 were not functioning with long lineups for drinks as we were leaving Barcelona. Otherwise, the cruise was very nice.
