Magic Bands

I never used magic bands. What are they used for? What are the advantages of the bands? Can you go to parks without them?

It's a room key/park ticket that you wear on your wrist. That's pretty much it.

The only function it can do that a regular plastic card can't is long-range RFID, which is used to automatically link on-ride photos to your PhotoPass account.

Other than that, it saves you needing to go into your wallet to fish out a card every time you need it. I like using it for the pool because I can leave my wallet and phone in the room.

If you are using genie plus you can use it to scan into rides. You could use your phone/individual tickets---but everyone in your party has to scan their tickets. For us having younger kids, the magic bands are just easier because they are more accessible and I don't have to worry about pulling out anything additional.

My favorite thing about the magic bands are being able to wear them directly into the pool and charge food/drinks back to my room (if staying on property). I can leave my phone in the room and not worry about having valuables at the pool. Plus the kids get a kick out of opening the door to the room with their bands.

If we were staying off property, now that there is a charge for them--I think we would highly consider skipping them especially with the reports lately of genie plus passes being gone by mid-day for many attractions.

It's worth pointing out that your old MagicBands will continue to work pretty much forever. There's no need to buy new ones every time.

you don't need a band, they can just scan your ticket card or your phone. the band is just more for convenience.

The bands are very convenient. Every time I go to the parks I get behind people who are using their phones as the ticket and it takes forever. It also happens at lighting lane sign ins. People with bands are passing straight thru and some one is paging thru their phone trying to find the right ID.
