Magic Bands Safe from Thieves?

Our son lost his TWICE in the pool at CBR last year, but we were not at all surprised that he was the only one in the family to have this happen :)

I think they're reasonable secure.

This was my concern. Think I will have the kiddos leave their bands in the room for swimming at the resort, and I will put them in a locker at the water parks.

I have a 2 and 5 yo. But my 40-something DH is the only one that's lost a MB!!! at the park.... kids have lost several at home.

We've only had one come off once and that's because it got caught on the arm rest of a wheel chair as my partner sat down.

What about your ticket on the magic band. What if you link a new ticket lose the band and someone enters the park with it. A new ticket does not have the biometrics yet.

The ticket isn't "on" the Magic Band. I'm guessing that since the ticket is assigned to a specific person on the MDE account, and the Magic Band is assigned to that same person, and that there was previously a ticket assigned to that person, that the biometrics of that person would then be part of the account information.

If someone were to steal your MB, they could not use it to get into a park unless they could pass the finger scan. If you had an unlinked band then they could link it to their own MDX account but it would not read YOUR tickets. The ticket info is stored on the account, not on the band. They would have to have your MDX password to get into YOUR account. They could not use it to enter your resort room unless they knew where your room was. They could not use it for charging to your room unless they knew your PIN number. They could use it to redeem your fastpasses, but they would not know when your fastpasses were unless they had the password to your MDX account. I guess they could scan it at a kiosk..so really all they could use it for would be fastpasses.

Well pre MB finger scans were assigned to tickets not people that could have changed.

We had them last year and they didn't seem to come off easily. But they do sell the little slider things that go on the back which may make them more secure.

Yes. they could. Just like they would be able to if you lost an unused ticket in any form.

Correct. I had forgotten my PIN number between my online check in and actually getting to the resort so I had to reset everything. I was required to provide a photo ID before they would do it.

There is no actually information on the band. Just a number that links with Disney's internal system. It is there that your CC number, room information, ticket information, and the like are.

I was not given an option to set up a PIN when I did online check in. I think I have always set it up when I got to the resort, but now I am wondering if not having a PIN set up will prevent me from being able to do the "straight to room" checkin? Should there have been a prompt to set it up?

Did you add a CC for room charging during on-line check-in? This is one of the requirements in order to use the 'direct to room' feature.

I did...which is why I am even more confused, ha!

It keeps your old pin for around a year. But you can ask to reset it at the front desk when you check in.

Either during on-line check-in or at the front desk of your resort. Each person can have their own unique PIN.

Yes, each person can their own PIN or you can choose your own.

Thirty some odd years ago, my husband and I were assigned a PIN for our bank card. This was so long ago, you couldn't change it without hassles. So we accepted it. It means nothing to us or anyone we even know but it has worked for thirty years. No one in our family knows it (except us) so it's a very easy PIN for anything. So that's my husband's PIN and mine is different.

So, you're asking about the very specific and unlikely scenario where someone steals your band before you enter a park for the first time, or you used your band to enter a park yet you have a completely unused ticket linked to your account. What happens if someone finds that band and decides to take the band to a different park, since they would need biometrics to enter the same park? Since the thief would be 100 times more likely to get caught attempting to enter the park, since most bands would link back to partially used tickets, he'd have to be pretty stupid to even try.
