Sorry if this is answered somewhere else - is there an advantage to purchasing the band for the $13 if you are not staying at a Disney resort? Do the bands offer more options than you would get with only buying park admission through Disney?

We were just there a few weeks ago. We didn't buy the magic bands. The only advantage I could see was not having to take my plastic card out to swipe for fast pass+. Not worth $13 times 4. If I had multiple little ones and not two teenagers maybe bands on the wrist might be a benefit if it was a long trip or if I was a frequent visitor and had to manage the tickets for little ones.

At this time, no, other than having it conveniently on your wrist and not needing a separate photopass card.

In the future there may be other features, such as charging, etc.

We had MBs from a previous stay, but we were not staying onsite. The band was our ticket only. It was fine for DH & I and by that I mean that it was convenient to have the key on our wrist for FP+, but for DS (3) it was a pain. I used his RFID card most of the time because it was awkward for him to get the right angle when touching the scanner and at enterances he was most often in a stroller. If you think that it looks cool enough and really want to have your ticket on your wrist go for it, but there is no other benefits to buying one.
