Magic Bands coming to DCL

I talked with a tech support guy about issues and he asked if I wanted both sets of bands slated to be sent. (Two one-night stays booked separately) I did, actually. In that conversation he said that you can call them and get a shipment cancelled if you don't want it. He said that that ability is new.

You can also not customize and not verify address. And then refuse the bands handed to you at checkin.

In other words, right now they offer bands with every reservation, but that doesn't mean you have to get them or accept them or use them.

And you don't have to wear them at all.

And getting a card is still an option. Just insist on it at checkin if you don't want to use the band. Our college program checkin cm at SSR offered it to us if we didn't want to use the bands, so it doesn't take a presidential decree to make them, even if some CMs have acted like it.

I know what you mean. I would rather carry a KTTW card in my pocket. I don't do lanyards either. Is the chip (or whatever it is) in a certain part of the band? Wonder if you could cut that part off...

The chip is in the Mickey head. Someone on the themeparks forum cut that part out leaving a little band on it and turned it into a keychain. Has used it without a problem.

Do you have to get a new band every time you go? Can't they just link your new stay to a band you already have?

You can re-use the old bands but they send you a new band for every single stay. There isn't an option to not receive any new bands.

That is true of everything like credit cards, ATM cards, etc. I see more problems carrying cash than these other things because once cash is taken from you it is gone.

True, but if they take your cash, that is all they can take. If you are carrying a bunch of credit cards, debit or a MB devises that are coming out (not just Disney per say) they can use them to charge against your accounts, empty the accounts and with the information on the cards or MB, they can take loans out against your property.

Granted some of this maybe refundable, but only after major and long term debates with the credit cards and banks, etc.

I think I'd really just want to loss the limits cash we would be carrying.

When the security issued are solid, then maybe we will go back to the plastic.

I am talking about generally purchases and shopping, not just vacations.

I had to confirm my address and make preferences to get my new bands. If I hadn't done that would bands be shipped out?

If you don't confirm your address and chose band color they will just give you new bands (grey ones) when you arrive at the resort. As far as I know there is no way around getting new bands every time you check into a resort.

Simply refuse them at the front desk.

You can call the IT people. I phoned the normal line with an issue with MBs not getting sent, was transferred to the Tech Support people. He said that they can cancel the MBs for a given reservation. That it's a new thing they can do.

One slight safeguard with the MB is that when you charge something using it, you have to enter a PIN, so unless you're stupid enough to write it on the band somewhere (laugh, but when I worked retail I saw so many tourists who had written their PIN on the back of their travel money cards so I could definitely see them doing that to their MBs if at Disney) they'd have a hard time charging anything to it.

They can try but the chances of losing your money if it is cash is 100% the chances of them using a MB to take out a loan against your property is pretty small especially since you are still alive and can inform Disney that the MB has been stolen.

Hi vacationer, Please reread, I was referring to all credit and debit type cards..........not so much just Disney. These thief's happen and are happening more often. That is why I feel the security issues need to be fixed!

This is my families personal choice but more and more of the folks we know are working with cash more and more.

To each their own.

I agree............but I was also referring the credit and debit and MB issued by other companies, and others cards.

We have tried not customizing and not confirming address and they STILL send out new bands. I don't know if that is because we have previously confirmed our address but it's so annoying.

I've had a credit card stolen before, back in the days before the internet. When I got my statement in the mail and saw the thief went on a $3000 shopping spree I simply called the bank, reported which charges were fraudulent, signed an affidavit that what I say is true and it was dropped.

Now if you're dumb enough to carry your SS card in your wallet, well then along with your DL, you're giving a thief all the info they need to apply for a loan in your name.
I think there's a big difference between stolen identity and a stolen cc.

No way will I use an ATM card as a debit card for purchases. A doctor's office accidentally double charged for a copay and it took months of calling, sending in copies of receipts to finally get it back. In the meantime, they already the $ from my checking account and I'm left begging to get it back. Never again. If that were a credit card instead of a debit card, I would not have to pay for those charges until it was resolved.
Also during the Target hacker scam last year a coworker had $800 sucked out of her checking account because she used her debit card to pay at Target. She eventually got it back but in the meantime that's a lot of $ to go missing.
If she had used a credit card, she would have had her cc bank on her side.

We so rarely use cash anymore that I don't even carry my ATM card in my wallet. If I know I'll be needing cash, I plan ahead, get my cash, and keep my card safe at home.

For me it's a good balance between convenience and security.

MBs aren't like credit cards and ATM cards. People really can't do much with the information on MBs.

This has been my experience as well-both before the internet and after. I use my one CC (free groceries) for everything here at home, and I have a US credit card that I use for online US purchases and while in the States. Since I regularly (read at least 4-7 times a week) check the statements, I know if/when my card has been compromised, and I deal with it immediately. It has happened 2 times over the many years, and was solved within minutes. I use my debit card (physical use ie in the machines with a PIN) here in Canada, but won't in the States. I would definitely not use that as a way to pay over the internet or phone....access to my funds directly? :sad2:

Our SIN (same as your SS) card is in our safety deposit box, because we have no need for it, and, yes, (for us, anyway) that is the information that an identity thief needs for loans etc.

I rarely use cash anymore, and my friends, family and co-workers are the same. (One son excepted) Fear of using plastic and online shopping has been ongoing for years. When I weigh it out for me, I agree with the above statement, it's a balance of convenience and security. And it is up to me to make sure that I am kept safe by checking my records on an ongoing basis.

Loved my RFID cards on the Fantasy! Looking forward to MB.
