Magic Bands 101

The answer depends on many factors, including what resort you're staying in, if legacy FP is available in the park you visit when you visit, and the FP landscape at the time of your visit.

But with FP+ exclusively? No, 3 is the limit.

I have a question based on your answer...If we go the first week of march, stay at AoAnimation and purchase tix separate from our room reservation and don't link them, would we be able to use the legacy FP system instead of the FP+. Are the thoughts that all legacy FP kiosks will be gone by then?

A lot of people are thinking legacy FP will be gone by then. I'm not sure, but that could definitely be the case. If it is still around, your plan sounds like a plausible way to use it.

This may have been asked before and I have read back about 10 pages but havent seen it. I just made reservations a couple of days ago for in May and we have customized our magic bands.
When will we be able to make our fastpass + selections ?

60 days prior to your trip/check in is my understanding from what the my experience app says :)

Sorry if this is redundant.
Just booked a disney ressie and was able to customize magic bands for the whole party. When I go to fastpass plus, myself and others who have magic bands from previous visit are eligible to make selections with a valid park admission, but not the members who don't yet have magic bands. It states they are not eligible for my magic plus? Am I mistaken to think tat anyone who can customize a band is a "tester"? Are all the resorts testing? Do I just need to link their tickets (waiting for them)? Thanks!

You can't book FP+ without tickets being linked.

I have a couple questions. We have already customized our bands, but haven't received them yet. When do you normally receive them? We will be there in March. Also, how will magic bands work at the pool at Beach Club? I know in the past you showed your room card. If they no longer have the room cards and are using the bands, are they going to scan the bands? Thanks.

In the Magic Bands customization area of My Disney Experience, it should give you a date by which you can keep making changes to your bands, which is probably about a month prior to your arrival. They will be shipped after that deadline date.

And yes, you'll be presenting your Magic Bands to use Stormalong Bay if there are no KTTW cards in use by then.

Got our bands today...yuck! So uncomfortable. I envisioned something completely flexible, but they're not. The bit where the Mickey head is located is hard and curves, but not very big, so curves before it clears my wrist. Hard to explain! If I was better with this site, I'd post a side picture. I have a small wrist and I find it uncomfortable. I would imagine someone with a larger wrist would find it even more so. Disappointed.

You'll need to have your pictures digitally loaded
into your computer, of course,
then go HERE:

http://www.photobucket.com/

(or sign up for any photo-server that you like)

Sign up (its FREE),
and follow the directions to upload your pictures to
the photo site.

You will then see each of your pictures in a window on
that site.

Copy and Paste the numbers from the "IMG Code" window
(below each picture) into your post.
Your image(s) will appear in your DISboard post after
its posted (you can click "Preview Post" to see them
before you post).

How long after you customize a magic band does it go from "magic band on order" under a profile to "has magic band" in your profile? Thanks!

Try putting it with the mickey head on the outer side of your wrist. This made it far more comfy for both me (smaller wrist) and DH (much bigger wrist). Having it positioned as though mickey's head were a watch face was really uncomfortable for us, but putting it so we could easily hit someone standing next to us* with Mickey's head was a lot better.

*just a way to describe the position...I won't hit anyone with it!

I'll try it!

Also: if you have a small wrist, don't forget that you can trim the excess length. It was MUCH more comfy after I did that!

Sorry if this has already been asked and answered.....if we are doing land/sea vac with time at WDW parks before and after our cruise, can we use the magic bands on the cruise too? Thought maybe we could use them to unlock the cabin door and to charge things.

I highly doubt that DCL ships are using MBs yet.

There seems to be a lot of misinformation/misunderstanding floating around about Magic Bands so I thought I would make one central post.

General
  • Magic Bands are soft, rubber wrist bands that contain an RFID chip.
  • You are not required to use the Magic Bands and may opt, instead, to use an RFID-enabled KTTW card.
  • They are waterproof and can be worn in the pool/shower on water rides (Splash Mountain, Kali River, etc.) and at water parks.
  • The band comes in one size, but a portion of it is removable to make it a better size for smaller wrists.
  • Magic Bands are tied to the person, not to a resort reservation.
  • They are meant to be brought back for years and re-used.
  • Your Magic Band is linked to your profile on MDE (also known as MDX). You can manage your own profile, as well as that of any family/friends you have. (Any Family & Friends members that manage their own account can be linked to yours.) Any reservations that are on your MDE/MDX profile will be accessible by your Magic Band. If you have more than one upcoming resort stay you will get a MB for each one, but all will work for all of the reservations because they are tied to your MDE/MDX profile.
  • You can link your profile to someone else's and you will then be able to link to any of their friends/family as well. Once this is done you will be able to make FP+ reservations for everyone.
  • To make FP+ reservations you will need a park ticket or annual pass attached to your MDE/MDX profile. If you have a park ticket you will limited to FP+s for the number of days on your ticket.

Customization
  • Once you have an active "Personalize MagicBands" tab in your MDE/MDX account you will be able to customize your bands.
  • You can choose from seven colors (gray, green, yellow, pink, blue, red and orange).
  • You can personalize each band with a name or nickname (9 character maximum).
  • There have been differing accounts of how long you have to customize your bands. Some have reported having until 10 days before check in. Others have reported having until 30 days before check in. Your best bet is to check your own MDE/MDX account to see what your options are.
  • Once you lose the ability to customize your bands or, if you choose not to customize bands, you will be given non-imprinted (no personalized names), gray bands at check in (if you would like them).

Shipping
  • Currently bands are shipped out approximately 29 days before check in. Once the testing phase ends the expectation is that bands will ship 10 days before check in.
  • Once your customization window closes your bands will be shipped out.
  • During the testing phase, most bands are shipped over night and will arrive 28 days before check in. They are expected to ship via the UPSP once the rollout is complete.
  • If you make your reservation at least two weeks in advance they should be able to ship your bands.
  • If you live outside the United States they will not ship bands at this time. Instead, they will send them to your resort for pick-up at check in. This is supposed to change once full roll-out of the program occurs but there are not more details at this time.

Use

  • Magic Bands may be used for the following...
  • As a park ticket.
  • As a room key.
  • As a resort account charge card.
  • For Disney Dining Plan credits.
  • To access Disney's Magical Express.
  • For PhotoPass and PhotoPass+
  • For Fast Pass + selections and entry.
  • For Resort check in.
  • For special magical experiences throughout WDW.
  • Access key-entry guard gates at Disney resorts.
  • Parking lot access for resort guests at Disney parks.

Notes
  • Disney has said that guests should not try to link tickets for hard-ticket events to their MDE/MDX accounts. These include Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party, Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, Night of Joy, etc. Guests should use the tickets provided to them to enter the park for these events.
  • All information in this post is subject to change as MDE/MDX and My Magic + are fully rolled out.

Please understand that all of these things are the way Magic Bands will ultimately work. During this testing/roll-out phase there are several glitches that need to be worked out. Go on your trip with an open mind and an expectation that at least one problem will occur. Every new system goes through a "breaking in" phase and MM+ is no different.

Safe travels everyone!

thank you

The MyMagic+ 'MagicBand-only' testing is set to expand from the Pop Century and All Star Resorts test to include all Walt Disney World Resort hotels by the end of January 2014.

Key to the World cards can still be requested, but are not available for regular FASTPASS use. This means that by the end of January 2014, all Walt Disney World Resort Guests will be using FastPass+, and will not have access to the legacy FASTPASS system.

The rollout for 'MagicBand-only' is as follows.
•Jan. 6 – Disney’s Art of Animation Resort
•Jan. 7 – Disney’s Port Orleans Resort
•Jan. 8 – Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort and Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort
•Jan. 9 – Disney’s Old Key West Resort and Disney’s Saratoga Spring Resort & Spa

•Jan. 13 – Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club Resorts
•Jan. 14 – Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge
