Magic band usage

We've been here just over a week now, at the yacht club, and are having an amazing time! Thought I'd just do a quick update on how we're getting on with the magic bands.

They were waiting for us at check in, in a nice little box, both personalised in the colours we chose a month or so ago. We've had them on almost constantly (they're waterproof) only really taking them off at night when we sleep. So far we haven't had a single problem.

Getting into the parks has been easy, and there haven't been any queues with other guests not being able to use them properly. Just scan the band at the turnstile and then your index finger. Turnstile turns green and you're in the park.

When we've charged purchases to the room, again this has been easy, just scan the band and type in your pin. It's probably quicker than using a card.

Using dining plan credits is simple, the server scans your band when you first enter the restaurant, and then your bill comes with your dining credit already deducted.

The best bit for me is the fastpass+. We booked these as soon as we saw we had the bands. I was worried they wouldn't work, but at the allocated time slot we've just turned up at the attraction, scanned our bands at the fastpass entrance and we're in the ride. A few times, the cast members have said, "thank you Steve and dawn", as we enter the ride, so I guess our names appear on a screen as we enter.

Today I changed our fastpass selection using the mde app on my iPad, as we decided to do MK instead of Epcot on Tuesday. Again this was easy to do, assuming there are fastpass selections still remaining, of course. Wifi in the parks and hotels has also been good. We can check our fastpass times from the parks, so there's been no worry about forgetting what times we have booked.

All in all I'm really impressed. We've enjoyed using them and can't wait to use them again! It may not be as perfect when every guest will have access to them, maybe fastpasses will run out quicker. But for now we have no complaints at all. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask away.

Are you still able to use the regular fastpass system? Just curious for our trip next month.

Glad to hear that they have worked well for you, i'm still on the fence with them until I try it out for myself.

Yes you can. It's called 'double dipping'. :-)

At the moment ;) they could stop that at any time as one of the T&Cs for FP+ is that you can only use one FP type. In future if you opt for FP+ you are effectively opting out of legacy FP.

I'm not sure they will stop this until its rolled out completely as it says on the invite you will still use FP with FP+ while in testing.
I'd think they would have to roll it out then let guests know that they can not use normal FP anymore.

When we checked in we were also given a key to the world card, as the magic band is still in testing phase. So right now, yes, we can still make regular fastpasses using the fastpass machines.

I'm under the impression that when it's officially rolled out keys to the world cards will not be given out at check in, just the bands. So without the card, no regular fastpasses can be obtained.

Good to hear, sure it will be phased out eventually, but nice to be able to take advantage of both systems for a trip. Enjoy rest of your trip.

That's right but anyone going after 30 November might not be able to use both - at the moment testing is up to then.

They could roll out 1 December and at that point stop the "double dip".

I don't think is wise to assume anything with this until you are very close to your departure date :)

We leave in two weeks time and I am looking forward to 'double dipping' and riding my favourite headliners more than once a day. Once the FP+ is fully up and running I don't think either of these will be possible:(

That is correct when testing has ended you will have to choose wether to have a magic band or key to the world card,
You won't be made to use MB and FP+ yet wether they will eventually phase out the KTTW card no one really knows as off site guests don't get bands and will still be able up use normal FP

As far as I know, there are no plans to scrap the cards and the plan is to leave them in place for those who prefer to opt out of wearing or carrying the band.

Once FP+ is fully rolled out the plan still seems to be to remove the legacy FastPass system in its entirety. Those opting too use the card, using tickets not linked to a package or staying offsite are to get RFID enabled cards. I do not anticipate the FP system as we know it to still be functional at all by the time we are there next summer
