We’re doing a large family trip in October and our youngest grandson won’t be quite 2 years old when we go. Do we need to get him a magic band or any kind of entry card? If not, will he be able to go on any rides?

Do we need to get him a magic band or any kind of entry card? Nope.

If not, will he be able to go on any rides? Yes, of course.

For his first trip to WDW (when he was about five weeks old; not sure if that makes me an awesome or terrible parent, lol) we got our little guy a magic band because they were still free. The name on the band was actually his in utero nickname because we hadn't yet setled on a name when we booked the trip! But his trips since then, we skipped getting him a band since they cost money and he would lose it immediately. Never had any issues getting him in the parks or on rides

Under 3 is free. They don't need anything and if they look like they are close to being 3, some cast members might ask their age. But they just go off of what the parents say and do no ask for any ID. The child will just come right in with you. No one blinks and eye. Edit to say that young kids do not need a ticket, and a magic band is just a ticket(and room key if staying on property), same as the key cards, but in a different shape.

A little off your OP, but as a grandmother also, I would suggest getting the child a tag for his sneakers with one of the parent’s phone numbers listed. You are traveling in a large group and don’t want your grandson getting shuffled around or lost.
