Magic 11/16/02 Illness - THIS IS WHERE YOU CAN POST ABOUT THIS INCIDENT

SmallWorld, I didn't get sick sick but I got some symptoms (nausea and stomach cramps) Is there anything specific you want to know or do you only want to ehar from those who got sick sick?

I'm going to my gastro doc today (I already ahd a follow up apt scheduled for my Crohn's even before the cruise) and I'm going to tell him I was on the ship even though I feel fine. I'll let you all know what he says about it when I get home.

If I were going on a cruise in the next few weeks, I would go see my doctor about possible vaccinations against this virus. I was told the yearly flu shot lessens the symptons for most flus. Anyone know if they've got one for the NV? Worth checking into and a lot cheaper and wiser than cancelling out an entire vacation. For future cruisers like me who never report when they get sick because they handle it alone - report to the med doctor onboard for documentation! DCL is being incredibly generous if that 4 day free cruise and 50% off on 7 day is the actual compensation. WOW!

There is no current vaccine for the Norwalk virus. :)

Just heard on CNN that CDC confirmed Norwalk virus on the cruise. Talking about cancelling the next cruise. Wonder how reliable it is since we all know the news is always so "factual".

especially since I always get an upset stomach on the cruise. Might as well make Disney pay twice cause they feed me so well. Rich desserts, lobster with butter, too many drinks lots of fresh fruit and veggies. Never fails to run right through me for the first few days.

According to the CNN website -- no decision has been made as to the next sailing. I wish they would keep their reports straight!
Jaronski said none of the ill passengers this week has left the ship for treatment.

And he said no decision has been made on whether to take the ship out of service when it returns to Port Canaveral, Florida, on Saturday. "We'll assess that situation depending on how many more people might become sick," he said.

Actually DCL has told us that they WILL NOT CANCEL the next cruise. It's probably not been announced to the media yet but that is what we have been told, as of this morning.

Well, Disney called .. said we can cancel-- but the cruise is still a go so far... We are going.. I guess if I get sick-- then it means I will be alot more hungry when I get to feeling better and those poor people working the buffet, room service, and bartenders will have to watch out!!! I do promise to my fellow Dis cruisers not to wear any dirty diapers into to the pool.. just so i know that Im not part of the problem!!! Bahama Momma here I come-- oops plane leaves in 2.5 hours!!! better mosey on down to the cattle ranch!!!!:smooth: :Pinkbounc :bounce:  :jester:

Jammarx and all others on the next cruise:

Just remember the most important thing, as I 've said before, WASH YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP AND WATER AND WASH FREQUENTLY!!!!

Go read the other thread. My hubby called Disney and they told him. Also Webmaster Michelle can confirm this.

webmaster michelle posted a thread as the official word from Disney..........

where'd you get the idea that it's a "serious" illness?...
as someone else said, it's a stomach flu.....certainly unpleasant, but not "serious".......

Saturdays 11/30 cruise has been cancelled and they are offering a 50% discount coupon to folks for a future sailing.

Can anyone tell me what the 50% off coupon is based on? Is this off the price that you're offered to rebook when you're on the ship or off their regular rates? If it's off the regular rates it doesn't seem like much compensation, especially for those who had problems on the Nov 16th sailing.

Ofcourse I don't know how they are handling this particular situation. BUT I can tell you from experience that in April 2001 when the ship had technical difficulties in St.Thomas (which caused us to miss Castaway Cay) we were all offered 50% off of the room of our choice at the lowest price we could find with our own TA's. We booked with Dreams and received 50% off of the lowest price they could offer us. Since we had a 1/2 price discount we got connecting category #10 rooms and the kids had there own room and hubby and I had our own -- it was terrific!

Well, only because you asked!!!! :D
I really am not wishing to fuel this whole 'debate' any further...

a quote here - "Passengers sick for 4 days and could not stand."

Sounds potentially serious to me... IMHO

Also, as mentioned: young children at risk for dehydration... Believe me, more small children are hospitalized for this than you realize! How about the elderly, or anyone else who may not be in the very very best of health. Imagine not being able to hold down very essential medications for up to 4 days. ( Note: I am not talking about people with life threatening health problems, like cancer patients etc... Just regular people.)

:D :D :D Okay, a little humor here :D :D :D

Newsflash.... Newsflash (background music, etc...)

NewsAnchor - "We have a breaking story about sickness on a cruise ship. Let's go to our reporter on the scene - our correspondent, Cant Getfacts

"Cant Getfacts - Reporting from Cape Canaveral here... The CDC has been called out, as several cruise ship passengers on HAL/Disney have reported common colds, seasickness, and indigestion from the rich fare served on the cruise ships!!! Several cruise ship passengers were flown home, at the cruiselines expense, halfway through one HAL itenerary... HAL has now cancelled the next cruise, and Disney is (considering) doing the same. This looks to be a serious situation."

"As you can see by this footage, ( Showing CDC officials scurrying around with test equipment, clipboards, etc.... Camera pans over to show workers in protective gear spraying and disinfecting every possible surface....) This whole ship is being sanitized from top to bottom.... Let's talk with one of the head CDC officials here and see what he can tell us... Here is Mr. Cy N. Tiffic, of the CDC."

Cy N. Tiffic: "Well, Cant, As you can tell, there is an outbreak here, and we are taking this very seriously. We are taking every possible measure to identify the origin of this common cold, and seasickness and indigestion, and to completely eradicate it."

Cant Getfacts: "Yes, we can certainly see that. This appears to be serious concern for future cruise ship passengers. They are scared of risking exposure to this common cold, seasickness, etc... Will this take care of the problem?"

Cy N. tiffic: "Oh, we certainly hope so. I was also involved in the investigation on the previous ship, and we have been unable to eliminate the problem as of yet. Out of the dozens of cruise ships afloat, these two cruise ships are currently the only two to be affected. And, we hope to keep it that way. Otherwise, this thing could spread very very quickly, and next thing you know common colds and seasickness and indigestion could be found on cruise ships everywhere!!
