Magic 05/17/03 Norwalk Virus again? - Not.

Seems like we hear about this happening on the Magic, but I have not seen any reports of problems on the Wonder. Does it just tend to happen on the 7 day cruises? Does the Wonder have wipes and hand washing in the Kids Club policies in place too?

Oh My God! I just checked in to see if our friends Cindy & Joey who are on this cruise had gone to the cafe. I hope they are ok since after hearing of our two experiences booked their cruise.

Happy, Healthy sailing everyone!

Lampskies~ I was thinking the same thing about the dry dock in Oct. We're booked a few sailings after it in Nov. & I feel like ship will have less problems after it's cleaned well. Any ship can have this problem. Hopefully it's something else this time...

Westjones,

There were definately people sick on the Dec.1, 2002 Wonder. And there were definately sick crew members. I didn't get sick until after the cruise. I guess if you are exposed to an illness you wouldn't get sick instantly. It would take a couple of days and by that time you would be off the ship. 3 or 4 nights is all the Wonder sails. Now we recieved our call of cancellation for the Nov.30, 2002 Magic at 5:00 c.s.t. Wednesday the 27th, which means they were at sea for 4 nights already. Had it been the Wonder everyone would have been off the ship.
I haven't given this much thought....Good point westjones!!

Our friends Carol and Nick (Darwin91) are cruising now. I just received an email from her and she didn't mention anything about people being sick. So hopefully it is a fluke thing.

We were just on the Magic May 10-17th. We didn't hear or see of any sickness. We ate at the buffets, touched the hand rails, and the kids were at the clubs everyday. It may just be a bug going around. ... I did hear a lady in the spa say she had been sick, but she said that she felt it was something she had eaten.

Wonderful day at St John...

No reports I have heard of further sickness.

Turns out the 5 families that I know of that were sick were all on the same dining rotation. So, this points to either a sick crewmemember or perhaps a single food source several nights ago.

we'll probably never know.

I'll be checking my daughter into the Kids club again. Dealing with her misbehaviors at St John Trunk bay was almost enough to make me sick :-)

KenP. ROTFL.. Don't you love it when the kids get overwhelmed. Makes for a great time.

Our friends Carol, Nick and their 5 yr old DD were on that excursion. Red headed gal, stating that so it may ring a bell.

KenP: What day was it that you officially found out about their illness? I'm just wondering if it was more than 24 hours after boarding.

-- SO glad you had a great day in St. John. What did you do there?

(Wish I were there right now!!!)

Oh no!! I have a friend on this cruise. I hope her and her family stay healthy.

Found out about my friends illness on Tuesday (she woke up vomitting at 5am). So that puts it 2.5 days after boarding.

Had lunch with her today (Thursday) and she is feeling much better, so thank goodness her illness was short lived.

St John's was great. Did snorkeling.

I haven't heard of any further reports of illness, and my friends family (2 kids and spouse) did not get sick and they were all crammed in a cat 11 room.

could have been a food poisoning or maybe something she ate while at a Port, not necessarily while on the ship.

As with anywhere, on land, or ship, people get sick. With several thousand people together, the odds are that people will get sick, just like anywhere else. I think that this tends to get blown out of proportion a bit. I know that Disney would notify if there was a problem. I was on the Nov. 23rd last year, and if they wouldn't have notified us even then, I would have never known there was even a problem. I didn't notice one bit of sickness. I was just on the May 3rd sailing and it was perfect as usual, nothing out of the ordinary. Had a blast, can't wait until next time.....

If the are a certain percentage of people ill it must be reported. I think the number is 3%. I read it on a CNN article before our trip was cancelled in Nov. 3000 people x 3% is 90 people. If not 90 it doesn't have to be reported. Take into account the people who don't report it, because they don't want to be a bother or don't want to be quarenteened who knows. Just cruise and have fun!!!!

I agree with you, "cruise and have fun!" I sure wouldn't worry my vacation away.... There's too much fun on the Disney Magic, for me to even think about anything else. For me that's a PERFECT vacation. I don't even think about work..... :bounce:

Ken P,
I know this is off topic, but which excursion did you snorkel at St. John with??
THanks,
Laura

Just back from the most amazing vacation as a family we have taken........
However, I was very sick on the Tuesday of our trip. Although left weak on Wednesday I was able to enjoy some shopping in St Thomas. Thankfully, no one else in our party came down with my symptoms. First thing Tuesday morning there were four other people seeing the doctor for the same reason, throwing up during the night.
Whatever it was, it was fierce but thankfully brief. I feel the whole post should not scare future cruisers but encourage them to practice EXTRA handwashing and using Purell.
KPonder was nice to share extra Purell with us!!
Disney was great, very thoughtful and went out of their way to make it better.
My apologies to the housecleaning guy who I had to use his trash can on his cart for an immediate toilet to throw up in........It's a very long walk from the clinic to room 6581.

This morning our daughter saw the boat in front of us in the parking lot and she said "Mommy why did we come off the boat?"

Wishing everyone healthy and happy travels over the holiday weekend

So glad you were still able to enjoy the vacation and everything the cruise involves!
Welcome back!

dewla,
to answer your question I did the Noon-ish, 5 star St John Swim and Snorkel, ST04. Fun. Keep in mind it's a 70min boat ride to st John so you only get 1.5 hrs at St John, but the boat ride is pleasant.

disneystyle,
Enjoyed crusing with you and your family. Palo's friday was great.

everyone,
some people say, "well it's just a stomach bug", "could happen anywhere", etc etc. Well if it happens to YOU, ONBOARD, it becomes quite significant!

My point in posting was to keep the board informed and solicit input from any other DIS cruisers onboard. Based on past experience, Disney will not comment on potential outbreaks until they are required to so do (3% sick). [editorial: this is due to the unfortunate legal climate we live in]. As I stated before, I was not trying to blame Disney but only get information in the best way I knew how. By Posting on Tuesday, and not seeing any further posts on Wednesday, I was comfortable putting my kid back in the kid's club on Thursday. That was nice. THANK YOU DISBOARDS and thank you Dreams Unlimited for sponsoring this board.
