Maelstromer Vs. POTC

Okay I've never been on the maelstromer ride in Epcot, but is it scary? I was reading in one of my guide books that there is a backwards part in the ride and a drop in the ride. I just want to make sure that the drop isn't backwards, because if so I'm staying away from the ride for sure.

I love POTC so if the drop in maelstromer isn't bigger than that I should be okay, but if it's like splash mountain I don't know if I'll want to ride it cause I'm not a huge fan of big drops.

My guide book said the maelstromer drop was 20ft, anyone know how big the drop in POTC is?

Thanks ya'll!

I've ridden both and didn't notice much of a difference in the drops. You should be fine on Maelstrom.

The slope is very gentle, the drop is weak. Have no worries!

The drop in Maelstrom is tiny. No need to worry. Plus the backwards part just looks like you're going to drop backwards...It really doesn't. Enjoy the ride!

It is a very gently drop, nothing at all like Splash Mountain. If I were to compare, I would compare it to POTC. I think you will be fine. Enjoy!

Comparing Maelstromer to Splash Mountain is like apples and oranges. You can defintely ride Maelstromer with no worries.

Maelstrom is fine and you do not go backwards.

<<you do not go backwards.>.
Yes, it does go backwards. What are you talking about. Ive been on it a few times.
A quote from the ride designer:
<<and the idea of having the boat turn around and go backwards. That idea was in the concept from the beginning, because they wanted the ride to have something unique about it that hadn't been done before. >>>

The Maelstrom is a moderate ride like POTC, but the Maelstrom does make a drop backwards and travels backwards for awhile, so you may want to re-think this ride if you do not want the backwards motion.

This ride does not even compare to POTC, IMO. The backwards part is short - like another poster advised, mainly to change direction. Nothing to worry about. Now if you don't like backwards, stay away from the new Everett ride in AK - Now THAT'S going backwards!

Yes, the backward part on Maelstrom is actually a big fat tease for those of us who would enjoy a little reverse motion. ;) You'll be more than OK on it. :)

You got that right! I did it a few times in a row, and did it ever get to me. :faint:

Thanks everyone! I'm more calm about rides when I know what to expect, otherwise I'm a neverous recck the whole time. I am not riding EE for sure, I hear it's great but I'm not a rollercoaster fan so I'll stay with the little one in our group while everyone else rides.

OK, that is cute once in awhile but if the repeated effort to deceive prevents someone from trying it then it is wrong. This person had a genuine concern (not joking) and the answer given might cause a situation where that person might not try a gentle, funny little boat ride. It does make you think you are going to go down backwards but it doesn't even come close, just an movement to put a little action in the ride. Go, you will enjoy it.

:sail:

I don't know that I would even call it a drop? A slope or slight angle comes more to mind as for the backwards part in Maelstrom! pirate:

I think that its difficult for some people to understand what a bid deal drops are to us ride wimps!

POTC is just about as much as I can stand.. and even then I absolutely HATE it. I have not done the ride in about 3 years as I hate the drop so much - so I wont try Maelstrom either..
I would rather not do it than try it, and find I dont like it!
So, saying its not nearly as bad as Splash isnt much help...
I would like to know how long the Pirates one is.. if its less or more severe and if its in the dark etc etc before I could possibly make a judgement!
I know this is weird and very wimpish.. but I just dont enjoy drops!

I am a total ride chicken who also loves POTC. I did Norway, and it is definately doable - along the same lines as POTC.

For some reason, the small drops in water (okay - I don't mean splash! LOL!) are not as bad as regular rollercoaster drops.

That being said, I consider Kali River Rapids to have the same degree of drop, and also love that one. Try that also. You'll feel like a dare-devil!
