So we bought a new dining room set from Macy's a couple of weeks ago. When we bought it, they told us we couldn't pick it up and it would have to be delivered. Delivery charge is $150. Not happy about that, but, hey, we like the set, so OK. The salesperson then tells us that the set can only be delivered during the day, no nighttime deliveries. Not happy about that either, until she says they have Saturday deliveries. OK, much better, now I don't have to take a day off from work.

So Friday I get a call that the furniture is going to be delivered Saturday (as in yesterday) between 12 & 3. Well, we all know how that goes, and before I know it the window is now between 5 & 8:30!!!! What??? I thought you didn't deliver after 5PM?? :confused3 This doesn't really work for us because we have plans to go watch the Phillies game at SIL & BILs house, but now have no choice and stay home.

8:30 comes and goes with no call from the delivery people. Of course, we don't have their number and Macy's says to check online to see when they'll be here. Check online and it still says 8:30, so we figure they are on their way. Finally go to bed after the game (it ended at 2:15AM) and still no furniture.

Now today, we have plans to go to our trailer at the lake and close it for the season, since it has to be off the lot by Friday. But NOOOOOOO, now we have to wait and see what time the furniture is coming. The website is not updated. According to that it is still coming yesterday at 8:30. No one at the store knows anything or how to get in touch with the delivery people. Can I say that it is still NOT here!!!!!

So now I have to take tomorrow off from work to wait for something that should have been here yesterday. Talk about being angry. DH says that when they show up to refuse delivery. But what does good will that do? We don't have a dining set.

I am going to write to Macy's. At the minimum I think they should waive the delivery fee, especially since we were willing to pick it up. I'll never, ever buy furniture, or anything that needs delivery from them again.

Thanks for listening!

I wouldn't take a day off of work. At this point I'd have them working the delivery around my schedule as it best suits me. And I'd have them refunding the delivery fee. No excuse for not showing up when they were promised - especially without a phone call from them.

I agree.

No need to take off from work, reschedule for next Saturday. INSIST they waive the delivery fee. They not only missed their scheduled time, they didn't call to inform you they wouldn't be able to make the delivery.

I really feel for you. I can't even begin to list all the times I've sat around waiting for a delivery or worker of some sort. I wouldn't even mind rescheduling, it just makes me nuts they don't call to inform you so you don't waste your time waiting.

Ugh, how frustrating!

I agree with the previous posters - don't change your schedule to suit them. Let them deliver when it's convenient for you. I, too, would refuse to pay the delivery fee. They promised a service which wasn't delivered and they were anything but polite about it. The very least that they could have done would have been to inform you of what was going on.

I hope your furniture arrives quickly and uneventfully. Keep us posted?

The same thing happened to us with Jennifer Convertibles. Except what happened in our case was because they didn't deliver in our area ( we were never told this) they canceled our delivery and didn't bother to tell us.

I was livid. I took the day off and waited only to find out it wasn't coming. I called to get it redelivered only to be told I would have to wait another 4 weeks because there were other people in front of me and how could I expect to move in front of those who had been waiting for their delivery. I should have seen the writing on the wall and just canceled the order because the sofa was garbage.

First of all I can't see how they can tell you, you can't pick up the dining set and then make you pay $150.00 to have it delievered. That would have been my red flag.

Only time we have things delivered is if its free. Whether I loved the dining set or not, I'd be looking elsewhere, a $150.00 mandatory delivery charge is ridiculous.

Are you sure they had it in stock? Sometimes, they insist upon delivery because they really don't have the furniture on hand, but there is one (on paper) at a warehouse, which will take a few days to get to you.

Then, when it's time to load the truck, the item can't be found!

Yea, a 150.00 delievery fee would have me walking too. Frankly, I would cancel the whole order if they did that to me.

If you *still* want the dining-room set, contact a local consumer-action TV or radio reporter.
Contact the Macy's store-manager directly. You've taken all this time off of work already, make a day of it and go sit on HIS front-step until he can somehow make the time to see you.
If you charged this on a Macy's cc, contact the Macy's cc # and press the 'cancelling account' option. Ask the person who answers how Macy's can make all this right.

If you don't...
Cancel with Macy's.
File a grievance with your credit-card company and the consumer affairs office for your county and the BBB.

And make sure to tell all your friends on the DIS what great :lmao: customer service you've gotten from Macy's.

I can think of some others but you get the idea.
agnes!
PS - It's pure & utter bs that the store can't contact the delivery-people. How did the delivery-service get your info in the first place? Did they pull it out of thin air?

I can't imagine paying $150 to have ANYTHING delivered, let alone a mere dining set. The most I've ever paid for delivery is $50 and it's usually free. (I know because we only have a small car and have to get any big purchases delivered.)

So, I guess I would look at this as a blessing. Now you can cancel the whole order, get a refund, and not have to pay that ridiculous fee. Why in the world would you take a day off work? Isn't that just adding to the price of the set in the income you have lost? I don't support companies that jerk me around.

I want to order a couple of very tall (8 ft) wardrobe/armoires from Ikea. They will charge about $150 for the delivery. I don't have a long pickup truck to pick up the wardrobe myself, so I'd have to rent a truck, plus I'd need an 2 people to load it and unload it. There are times when it's easier to pay the extra extortion - err- fee.

Is it actually Macy's doing the delivery? I refuse to buy anything from a store that does not have their own delivery people. You always get the run around.

I would have been in the furniture department at Macy's Sunday morning making someone as unhappy as I was the night before!

Because we live 45 plus miles from civilization, at least that is what a lot of retailers think, to have a dining set my husband bought last week delivered would have been $100.00. He had them take the top off the table and put all of it in the back of his truck.

We paid for Saturday delivery on a big screen TV from Sears, they didn't make it. But it was due to flooding in the town and there was no way they could get to my house. However, they never called. I called on the next Monday to reschedule then went to the store, they refunded the fee.

Ok but that's not the case here. The OP said she would have been perfectly happy picking up the set herself for FREE. I know that it is sometimes handy to have things delivered. Like I said, we always do. But you can also choose to shop at places with free delivery, reasonable rates, or hire someone with a large truck for $50.

Down here places with free delivery are few and far between. And if they offer free delivery it is in the form of a rebate. So you pay it up front and then send the receipt back and wait for your money.

There is no such thing as free. If the store doesn't charge a separate fee, it's built into the cost of the product.

When the delivery charge is rebated, the store knows that no everyone will take the time to send in for the rebate or will even remember to send in for it.

Yes, that is how it sometimes works around here too. I don't mind that at all. Rebates of any kind are great.

Even if the retail company doesn't deliver for cheap or free where you are, there must be delivery companies or private individuals that can offer a better deal.

Well, they'd lose money on me then. I always send in rebates and have never been stiffed yet.
