Maclaren Stroller Recall- ALL strollers 1999 to current

Got this email from Baby Bargains this morning (I am 'AddiesMom' on their message board):

Breaking news: Maclaren plans to recall 1 million strollers---all its production between 1999 and 2009---after receiving 12 reports of hinges on the stroller that amputated children's fingertips. The company will send out a cover for the hinges to all owners.

BABY BARGAINS has learned the CPSC and Maclaren will issue a press release in the recall this Tuesday; Maclaren began notifying its dealers of the recall in the past couple of days. We have seen the letter that went out to retailers last week and can confirm the details.

Here is the take-home message until the recall is official:

• Stop using all Maclaren strollers---yes, every model made since 1999.

• When the recall goes public on Tuesday, order a hinge cover from Maclaren's web site or phone line. (Note: the web site is not live yet as of this writing).

• Wait until you install the hinge cover before using the stroller again.

I just seen this this morning on GMA. Unfortuntely we are leaving for WDW with it on Thursday, no time to get the hinge covers and no money to buy a replacement stroller.

Which hinges are they refering to?

probably the hinge that is on the side about chest hight for the child. Looking at the pic, if you look at where the name is on the side, right in line where the buckle is, look straight across on the stroller. you will see the hinge there, that looks like a finger could get caught.

On the Maclaren website it says it poses a hazard only when opening and closing the stroller. HTH

I called Maclaren this morning regarding my stroller. When I pulled up the website it asks for the VIN from the stroller. The sticker with the VIN was worn off the frame and I did not have it written anywhere. The operator said to submit the form without the VIN and they would send the kit. I use that stroller everyday, many times a day. I figure many more people are in the same boat I am in .... can't find the VIN. Now you know! Hope this helps someone.

Wonder how long it will take for the kits to arrive. 6-8 weeks without my stroller and a baby who doesnt walk yet.. FUN!

I assume you've been using the stroller, and have yet to leave your fingers in a hinge. Just continue using it as carefully.

And keep the kidlets from playing with it. Thankfully we've always had a "no kids dealing with the stroller" rule in our house (b/c I cannot stand it when kids are pushing their strollers all erratically), so no worries. I'll get the kit, just seems prudent (and ups any resale value it might have when DS is done with using it at Disney), but I wouldn't *worry* about it in the meantime.

I can't even get through on the phone or on the website. At least I am not in a rush, DD is now 4 and the few times I am opening or closing it she is usually strapped into her carseat. I just want the kit for my Volo before our Christmas vacation.

Only 12 instances and they're having to spend all this money on a recall? Is it any wonder why strollers and car seats are so expensive?

I have 3 girls (4, 2 1/2, and 1) and baby number 4 due in May. Our role as parents is to prepare our children for the path, not prepare the path for the child.

Before anyone gets too upset, I'll add that I don't have covers over our electric sockets and our baby eats with a sharp metal fork along with the rest of the family.

It's not ALL Macs...I have a Quest, and it's not included in the recall (only Quest MOD and SPORT are included). My point is, it's only select models. Check carefully before you assume your stroller is included.

But, I agree with the above poster. Why stop using it immediately? I mean, I've owned these strollers for years (we have a Triumph which is included in the recall, and which we use daily). I've never worried about my child's fingers getting caught while I fold/unfold, because I'm a CAREFUL parent who pays attention to where my child is when I have to do that.

Just takes a few irresponsible parents to cause a massive panic and recall.

It's totally not even worth the recall, IMO. 12 kids out of 1 MILLION strollers? I assume many more children were injured by falling out of the strollers in the same time period...

And, by the way, there IS a warning in the instruction manual about the "scissor action" of the umbrella style folding action, and mentions being aware of hand/finger location when folding/unfolding...

While we're at it, let's pave the "path" with cotton balls?

Even though its mostly due to parental negligence, the parents aren't the ones geting their fingertips amputated. Also, I agree about preparing them for the path but a 1 yr old wouldn't be getting the message right away..if MacLaren knows there's a potential for amputation (!) it wouldnt hurt them to send out a safety hinge.

I just checked the cpsc site regarding the recall, and it says "This recall involves all Maclaren single and double umbrella strollers." Which "includes" Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, TechnoXLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveller.

I take that to mean it covers ALL umbrella strollers, even though they didn't say regular Quest. I was all excited, because we had a new quest but when I went to the site that's what I read. I think it's a judgment call - I'm going to order the part and see if it works. But in the meantime, I'll continue using the stroller and I do agree with everything you're saying. Just wanted to mention that parents with regular quests may want to look into it.

I just ordered my covers this a.m., but i will still use the stroller until I get them. Also, for the op, I don 't think they make a plain Quest, I think they are all either mod or sport. You might want to check again. The sport is the solid 2 tone and the mod has the print on the seat.

I have a quest that is a solid grey. Not two toned at all. So maybe they do make a plain quest??? I am shocked at some of the responses. But I will refrain .......

The recall comes after 15 reports of children placing their fingers in the hinge mechanism of the stroller. Along with these 15 reports, there have also been 12 reports of children amputating the tips of their fingers due to the dangerous stroller.

The strollers involved in the recall are the Maclaren single and double umbrella strollers listed below:

Volo Triumph Quest Sport Quest Mod Techno XT TechnoXLR Twin Triumph Twin Techno Easy Traveller All effected strollers were sold at mass merchandise retailers nationwide between 1999 and November 2009.

As a remedy, Maclaren is offering free hinge covers to better protect children. No matter where you live, you can order them on the Maclaren USA website. Yet as of Monday afternoon, it was difficult to access the site because it was overloaded. "We are working to address the issue," says Charlotte Addison, marketing manager for Maclaren USA. "We didn't anticipate getting the volume that we got today," she says, explaining that since Maclaren had originally planned to announce the recall on Tuesday, the site wasn't ready for the huge traffic.
