Macaroni and cheese and hot dogs??

Ok, so when I first met my DH he asked me what my favorite meal was. I told him Hot Dogs & Macaroni & Cheese. Little did I know he was planning on making a romantic candle light dinner!!! :lmao: Had I known that I would have told him Filet Mignon!! :goodvibes

Perhaps cybrikitn's son has a strong British gene:confused3

:rotfl: I wouldn't put it past him! There's British on both sides. My FIL has dual citizenship British (colony)/US and my Great Grandmother was from Wales.

He does like hot dogs though. Just can't understand why he does not like what most kids his age like (mac & cheese and pb&j). He likes chicken, hamburgers and hot dogs and that's pretty much it :confused3

My DH loves that. He makes it for him and the kids all of the time- only it takes 2 or 3 boxes of mac n cheese and 2 packs of hot dogs for my crew!

It is just totally blowing my mind that macaroni & cheese with hot dogs in it is something strange or different to anyone. It's like finding out someone has never heard of pizza or something.

There are a couple of schools of thought on making it. The central difference is whether you cook the hot dog slices with the pasta or separately. You can't beat cooking the hot dogs in with the pasta for ease of preparation, plus the cuts develop a distinctive bowed shape.

But, I personally prefer them cooked separately and folded in after the mac & cheese is prepared. I think boiling the hot dog bits in the water tends to leach the fat out, which in turn leaves them somewhat bland/flavorless. The "hot dog" taste is richer if you cook them separately, then cut them and add them in.

LOL...... mind blowing isn't it?

So my secret to not losing the flavor is to wait and add the hotdogs for only the last couple of minutes of boiling time.
I also add a little mustard when adding the milk for the cheese sauce

Growing up this was one of those weird treats that dad made us (although he can't stand mac n' cheese). You cook them separaely and toss the cut hot dogs in and stir them around for a bit. I can't stand this now and won't touch it if the two are mixed.

Oh course! I sometimes make what I call "bachelor's mac 'n cheese": Cook up a box of elbow macaroni, stir in some velveeta and milk, and add sliced hot dogs or sausages. Not recommended by the American Heart Association, but oh...so...good. My wife won't touch it, though.

An ultimate comfort food. I prefer tuna in boxed M&C though.

I like hot dogs cut up in plain spaghetti noodles with grated cheese stirred in. My mom made that on vacation once about 40 years ago when that was what she had leftover in a hotel kitchenette and I never forgot it. I can still picture the hotel and everything. I make it sometimes for myself for lunch when the kids have hotdogs - they would rather just have a bun.

Try using sour cream instead of milk, and add a little curry powder

This thread cracked me up! :lmao: It's funny how everyone is used to different things, isn't it? The idea of tuna in Mac & cheese makes me feel ill!

DH hates hot dogs in mac & cheese, but my kids both love it. Of course I can't quite comprehend doing it with homemade mac & cheese...just the boxed stuff. We always cut the hot dogs into "circles" and boil them with the noodles...the juice gets thrown out. ;)

For us, this was always either for lunch or for dinner when Dad wasn't home & I didn't feel like cooking much. LOL

Years ago my Mom used to serve this for lunch when she provided daycare in her home. I worked 5 minutes from her house so I'd go eat lunch there. I'd eat the Mac 'n' Cheese and hot dogs with the kids. I'd even make it for dinner for myself when DH was working 3pm-11pm shift.

aprild, I was going to post that, you stole my brain! :)

However, we make it with vegetarian/tofu dogs, not those made with meat. Still quite delicious!

I agree.

I am vegetarian NOW, but I wasn't always. And my mom usually cooked from scratch for us (even down to spaghetti sauce), but not always.

We used to have Kraft mac and cheese, but instead of plain hotdogs all the time, sometimes we would cook some knockwursts and cut them up to be put in the macaroni and cheese. VERY GOOD. Other times it was just hot dogs. Really depended on what was in the bank account and what was in the house.

When my mom made mac and cheese from scratch, we didn't add those things. She spent WAY too long making that stuff, and it tasted just fine on its own...to have added stuff would have been silly.

For DS now, we make Safeway O Organics brand of white cheddar mac and cheese (not orange Kraft cheez stuff), and we have made tofu-dogs to go alongside it. He hasnt' discovered the beauty of mixing it in yet. :)

And then back up to the recipe aprild and I mentioned, it's a Rachel Ray recipe, and it has real cheese cooked into it, along with mustard and ketchup, and it's just, well, "Yum-O".

I ain't 6 - but sounds good to me!!

I also put hot dogs in my ramen noodles :thumbsup2

I during the winter months make a cassorle with macaroni, shredded sharp chedder cheese, hot dogs, onion, can of cream of chicken, a cup of milk, and saltine cracker crumbs sprinkled on top with melted buter drizzled

That and some biscuits
