Mac vs. PC

We switched last September and love our iMac. We bought a refurb so it was a little cheaper than brand new, but they are still checked out and anything that needs replacing is replaced and under the same warranty, so they are almost as good as brand new, just a bit more affordable.

iMac's are quieter, run smoother, rarely have issues or lock up or shut down (never seen a blue screen of death or been rebooted, etc.). They take up a lot less space - no giant box and cables running everywhere to a separate monitor, etc. It's all right there inside one compact package. Love that. And much quieter than our old box PC that would need the fan running to keep it cool and often sounded like a jet trying to take off, etc. DVD/CD is quiet as well. Very easy to learn, intuitive, lots of great features. :thumbsup2

There are some things I need XP for so we run XP in VMWare Fushion so I can run both at the same time. If you do be sure that the first thing you do on the XP side is download ZoneAlarm and a good Antivirus software for the XP side as the XP side will still get attacked constantly by virus and adware, etc. Not really an issue on the Mac side.

Plus, as an added bonus, Mac kicks PC's butt in commercials, haha. :lmao:

I will say that after 6 months our last refurb iMac did have problems - screen went dark but the machine was still running. They tried replacing the video card but that didn't help. After a week of trying to replace all the various parts the whole thing crashed and the hard drive died with it so we lost everything. But a couple of days later we had a new 2009 iMac refurb to replace it at no cost - and the new iMac was the newer version with iLife 09, faster processor, bigger HD, etc. So we kind of got an upgrade out of the deal, lol. Sucked to lose all the data, but I should have had a more recent backup (we had just moved and it wasn't high on my priority list with the packing and unpacking and such). Still, that they replaced it with the newer version was great. And it was all through our local Apple store a few miles away, not via some 800 number in Wisonsin or Washington, etc. I could actually talk to a human. I love Apple stores. They are great in every way.

We had our first mac for 9 years (a G3) it still works but was slow so we got a new one last year. The only problem we ever had was the monitor turned black. After calling apple, they overnighted us a box to pack it in, sent someone to get it, and sent it back repaired for free. It was two years past it's warranty. Who else does that? Outstanding customer service.

My sister recently bought two new macbooks. Of course this week they came out with the newer better ones. Sis called wanting to return hers- the new ones are cheaper- they did it, all she had to pay was the restocking fee.

They really stand by their products.

Thanks for everyone's responses. We were in the Chicago Apple store which is what started hubby into this. It's just a lot of money...... The kids and I all have an ipod and they are pretty intuitive to use. I hope the mac is also. I do like it that it will hardly take up any space. Hopefully it won't take me too long to figure out. Thinking about taking our old computer to the store and having them transfer all the stuff. Do have a camera that is about 5 years old. I hope that software will let me transfer stuff.

We  our MacBook! My DH wanted to buy a Mac, but I was completely against it. Now, I don't know how we ever lived without it!

I still have to use a PC at work, and I absolutely dread using it. It is slow and quirky. Some people will say that Macs are too expensive, and they can get much more PC for their money, but I don't agree. IMHO, you are paying for quality and convenience. Sure a PC might be cheaper, but in my experience, they are also less reliable. I'll keep my Mac!

Oh, and Apple's customer service is top-notch! Dealing with Dell was a nightmare!
