anyone use either of these for a desktop?
just want it for basic internet surfing, email, photos, video, etc.

I have a Mac Pro at work, iMac at home, and am typing this on a MacBook Pro. Unless you need the power of a Mac Pro - and it sounds like you don't - I'd recommend an iMac. A Mac Mini could work for you if you already have a compatible keyboard, mouse and display.

oh iMac is another possibility, didn't realize that one is a desktop too.

if my current peripherals will work I was thinking the mini would be the one.
I haven't been into the apple store yet, just looking online.
thinking ahead to when I will need to replace one of our old pc's.

Minis are perfectly fine :) They're more powerful than most people give them credit for.

iMacs are better however, I gotta admit.

When I got a Mac Mini, I used the keyboard, mouse and monitor from my PC.

BUT -
you have to plug the keyboard and mouse into a USB port, so if they have the old kind of connection (I think it was PS/2), you'll need a converter. I think Radio Shack sells them.

AND
The shortcuts aren't the same if you use the PC keyboard. For example, on a PC you press the CTRL key and the P key to print. With a Mac, the CTRL key doesn't work; you need to press the key next to it. My fingers can find the CTRL key, but can't find the key next to it unless I look.
