Our local M & S does not offer this service, but I am in London on Friday on business. I'd hope to nip to the M&S at the top of Oxford St to exchange about £300 for dollars.
Can I do this on demand, or do I have to pre order? Do they make a commission charge?
Thanks

I got mine from M&S and you can pick your money up there and then, commission free.
Anything other than payment of cash needs to be accompanied by ID, passport, drivers' license and credit card payments have a charge of 1 1/2%-2% ( can't quite remember which)

If you're in London TTT Moneycorp are worth taking a look. They are offering $1.66 to the £ today. They charge a commision (1.75% - minimum £3.00) but even then it is still an excellent rate.

To get the best rate you need to check their website under Retail Currency - Special Offers. This is normally $0.01 better than their standard rate. You need to quote the web site offer at the exchange and then they will give you the better rate.

They have several branches around London, 1 in Oxford St. and 1 in Oxford Circus for example - again you can see on the website. They have dollars in all of them but may not have travellers cheques everywhere.

They also have branches in some airports but the exchange rate at these is nowhere near as good and they don't do the special offer rates.

M&S do not need any advance warning, especially not the oxford street branch. My last 2 or 3 trips to the US i have walked into M&S and changed between £4000 and £20000 and they have always had enough on site!!!

Simon,

Thanks for the info on and link to TTT's website - I've never seen a retail forex broker sell at rates so close to spot rate.

I think I'll be paying them a visit next time I'm down in the smoke !:hyper:

Thanks for all the advice! I used the Oxford St M&S no problems. I did get a bit of a scare when the woman in front of me changed £5000 into dollars but there was plenty left for me! A reasonably good rate of 1.622 so I was quite happy.
Thanks again.
