Lyft/Uber Tip Question

I have heard from people I know that you may have a rude diver or somebody not want to pick up if you do not tip prior to pick-up, but I have also heard others say you should always tip them in cash. I suppose region/state may make a difference.

For those who used this service in Disney, what has been your experience? Prepay or give cash?

I always tip after the ride. And give cash if possible. Cash tips aren't necessarily reported. That's between the driver and the IRS. I've never had a problem getting picked up for a ride.

I honestly would never tip ahead of time. I truly base my tip on their service, so I decide after the ride how much I want to tip them. If someone didn't want to pick me up because I didn't pre-tip then I probably didn't want them as my driver, anyway.

I also never tip in cash, mostly because it's just more convenient in the app and I don't carry that much cash anymore. Tipping in cash means that money 100% goes in their pocket, and as PP noted there are some tax implications (though cash tips should be reported to the IRS).

I pre-tip when I do restaurant takeout, over concern on food quality. But for a ride service, never. If the driver is of few words, I don’t think the driver’s rude. If the driver is demeaning or nasty or anything along those lines, yes, the driver is rude. At the end of the day, that shouldn’t impact safety of the ride. But, I’d still give a negative review and report to corporate; that person shouldn’t be driving others.

Never heard of such a thing.

I always tip after the ride. I tell the driver, "I will give you 5 stars and tip you in the app" and they always seem happy to hear that.

What I have heard is that rating them is kind of like "Pass/Fail." Anything less than a 5 is bad for them. But I am not a driver so I am not speaking from personal experience.

I've never ever tipped in advance. I generally tip via the app, if the driver was really good; friendly, helpful and clean care I usually tip more via the app. I've only tipped cash twice as we had a driver that was outstanding and the ride was a good distance, in those two cases I tipped normal via the app then handed additional cash. If you don't tip via the app you can be seen as a non-tipper and potentially get blocked that way too (or so I've been told).

Is it even possible to pre-pay the tip? I’ve never once done that on Uber or Lyft. I tip in app after the ride is completed.

Sounds like you’re mixing up riding and ordering food. I do pre-pay the tip when ordering food out of hopes they won’t screw with my food.

Blocked by a driver? Because the platform won’t block you for that. Heck when Uber started it didn’t even allow tips and even today they are clear tips are optional. The only thing failing to tip can do is screw up your rating as a rider if your driver feels it’s worth the effort.

Never heard of pre-tipping for a ride either. I appreciate the service and if the ride is good I tip well (through the app). Have only had one ride (here at home, not in Orlando) where I tipped an average amount due to the driver and car condition.

This took me down a google rabbit hole on rideshare tipping and I’m kinda in shock. Recent study says only 30% of people tip their rideshare drivers and Reddit reports from drivers are even less than that. Like, what?! I guess I just assumed tipping a rideshare driver was as normal as tipping waitstaff in the US…

Kind of sad. They work hard to support themselves and their families. I have talked with many of my drivers in Orlando about their stories.

You can't really tip in advance. Lyft will sometimes pop up a tip screen when you get near your destination.

Lyft let's you set up a default tip. At the end of the ride your % and dollar amount are listed. You have the option of adjusting, or even deleting the tip, before it's processed. The driver doesn't know that.

Rideshare companies originally suggested the app price is the total price, tips not needed.
Customers using food delivery apps tip in advance. People tip their server and taxi driver when they pay. People add a tip on the rideshare app after the ride. Easy for the rider to say I'm tipping on the app as he leaves

I'm shocked the % tipping is so low

This is what I do as well. Let them know I will be tipping especially if being dropped off at the airport where I may take a few extra minutes since I will be juggling bags and stuff until I can check my bag.

There were a lot of comments from drivers on Reddit that saying that is a big old red flag the passenger won’t tip. I’ve never told my driver I’m tipping and it never comes up in discussion, I tend get around to it within a couple mins to a few hours after reaching my destination.

It’s probably not a great idea to say that for Uber that requires the driver rate you before they get their next ride. They could dock you for likely being a jerk and then it’s a hassle to go to the effort to re-rate you when the tip surprisingly manifests…

Interesting - I will definitely try to remember that. Thankfully my rider rating is very high so apparently not been a problem for me in the past. I really only use UBER about 5-6 times a year (and it is usually almost all at WDW).

Agreed. I've never mentioned tipping to a rideshare driver and it's never come up. I always just take care of it in the app after the ride ends.

I tip after the drop off, in cash. I've been told by drivers that they prefer it because it's not reported. I don't care if they don't report it, that is not on me. If I know I'm using a rideshare, I make sure I have some cash. It doesn't affect your passenger rating (cash tip) because the feedback is coming from the driver! If you tip, you are good (unless it's like $1).

I used to tip with cash. I was going through screens, there was a report which said I tipped one ride our of 5 (4 were cash tips,). I don't know if those reports night, in the future, be a accidentally releases.

I try to tip on the app before I leave the vehicle . I'll sometimes tell the driver I tipped on the app, make sure they pay you

I wish they’d accidentally release tip reports to drivers. Since apparently only 30% of us tip my rides would get picked up so much quicker 😂
