Lunch with an Imagineer - My Experience 04-21-08

Well, in respect to Beastly Kingdom....it's not a dead concept. It's being worked on but it's not happening anytime soon.

Night Kingdom aka the 5th gate is in the works. The name of the park and the entertainment inside is very much still up in the air, but it's coming sooner than Beastly Kingdom.

There is a big battle within Imagineering about the inclusion of those Disney characters in IaSW. Over in Hong Kong, it was needed to help "brand" the characters, but I expressed my extreme dislike of the idea at DL. I explained that while I know that the parks are not museums, that Mary Blair's art should be respected and the characters have no business inside that ride because it has NOTHING to do with characters. I feel that they can play with the interior of the IaSW in the other parks, but let Mary Blair's art stand at DL. Her family has expressed extreme displeasure about the changes too, so it's a battle that has not yet been settled. I can hope that the Disney characters will not be placed inside of the ride.

She told us what things that we might have seen that she was responsible for. She is working on the American Idol attraction. We discussed how American Idol might be an attraction who's time has already come and gone. We asked what happens if the winner is over the maximum age allowed in the AI competitions, since the winner at the end of the day would get a front of the line pass to AI in whatever city that they chose to go try out at. There was no answer for that yet. Basically, this attraction sounds like something that would not interest me in the slightest.

She just finished working on the Waste Management feature at Innoventions in Epcot. She was responsible for stuff at DCA and in DLRP too. She worked for Disney for several years, left the company, and returned again a couple of years ago.

Is that enough scoop? ;)

Good for you! You're sure to enjoy it. We just did Dinner with and Imagineer at Artist Point last week. We dined with Cathy Carver, principal interior desigenr for WDI. She has been with Disney for 30 years, recently lead the team to create the Cinderella Suite in the Castle, the new Emporium shop on Main St. and is curently working on the public areas for AKL Villas. Great conversation and dinner. Fabulous.

Enjoy!

Sounds like you had a super time. I can not hardly wait till May 19th. That is when our lunch with an Imagineer is. I was hopeing you would report back on your lunch. Thank you sooooo much for your report. :cool1:

lets hope I either get a call verifying my name spelling or they actually listened to me when I spellerd it out in first place. I'll be one unhappy princess if they misspell my name on my name tag

If your spelling is at all atypical (e.g. Kandy instead of Candy), they will absolutely confirm it with you. If not - worst case - they'll create a correct name tag and send it to you (I would think).

Just one more question, if it was discussed at all -- more than the inclusion of Disney characters in IASW (not thrilled, but hope they would at least be in the style of Mary Blair), I was concerned about the talk of removing the rain forest scene and replacing it with a tribute to America -- ugh. What a public relations nightmare that would be, and just really, really bad symbolism, KWIM? :sad2: Did she happen to discuss that, and if it was true, or not, or considered but not set in stone?

Thanks for your summary - of your meal and the talk! Sounds like a good experience.

Perhaps you should put what the Imagineer told you all over on the "rumors and news" board - I just discovered it a couple of days ago, haha, and this seems to be in line with that stuff!

Congrats! What a wonderful experience. I really hope to do that with my daughter one day when she is a bit older.

Side note: I thought that you were not supposed to discuss what you learned from the Imagineer and that you had to sign something like a non-disclosure agreement? Is that not true?
I have a friend who did this in 2005 with her daughter and the Imagineer she had lunch with had her do that. He told her all about how they were planning to gut SE and about all of the upcoming changed to POTC with the additions of Sparrow, Jones and Barbossa.

I signed nothing. I just showed up and enjoyed the hours that followed. We were not asked to keep the info discussed to ourselves. The majority of what was discussed was the same stuff that you see on other rumor/news websites. Very little outside of what can be commonly found on the internet, if you know where to look, was discussed.....mostly because we asked about these things, not that the Imagineer freely offered up the info.

As to the issue of specifics on the IaSW proposed changes at DL, we didn't cover those specifics. Sorry.

I've wanted to try this and I'm glad someone got to do it recently and report!!! Thanks!!!

There she is, our Imagineer with Bubba Duck. That was one lucky duck! ;)

Wow. She looks like Kari on Mythbusters!

Lucky duck! :)

Glad I found this thread!

How about younger kids at this...my kids will be 9 and almost 11 next year, and the one who will be 9 is the reason I might book this. How are the imagineers w/kids? How many people are booked at one time? Are you, the imagineer and other families all at one big table? Anyone ever been the only family there?
thanks!

oh, another question...I saw (in a different thread) that it's not really recommended for kids under 14. Oh no!

There were no kids at our lunch, but I think that well behaved kids 8 and older would do well. But, a lot depends on the kid and how much they really get into the idea of speaking with someone who is behind the scenes. I would encourage you to talk to your children and ask them to think up questions about how things are designed, the creative process, and that sort of thing, so that they can feel like they are equal parts of the discussion. Our Imagineer was very good at involving everyone, even the people that were there because another DIS'er had them in her party that day....not because they had any burning desire to meet an Imagineer.

As with many of the tours there are age limits for various reasons. Dining with an Imagineer has a 14 y.o. age limit. I brought my 18 y.o. to Dine with An Imagineer at Artist Point in April. One couple showed up with thier 9 month old! :confused3 Yes, they paid for her as well. She was sweet and adorable. We spent 5 minutes discussing how sweet and adorable she was, plus several interruptions as they took turns leaving the table as she fussed. Yes, she was teething. I did not appreciate this disregard or bending of the rules. Otherwise it was a very enjoyable evening andf I would recommend it. I look forward to bringing my 11 and 13 y.o old when they are older.

My 2 cents.
