We're in between rainstorms right now. It rained off & on Sunday through yesterday, and we expect rain tomorrow. But right now, the sky is a beautiful shade of cerulean blue.

So, I decided to take advantage and run a quick errand to Office Depot during my lunchbreak -- I work in El Segundo, and about 5 minutes away from the LAX airport & another 5 mins or so from the beach.

Quick errand finished, I was on my way back to work when I saw an In & Out Burger joint. Well, I often read such great reviews of this place from Jeff in BigD that I figured, 'what the heck,' and turned in the little side street to go through the drive-through. Hooo my gosh - you shoulda seen the LINE going through there!!! There were at least 10 cars in line.... Well, since my lunch hour is technically 42 mins, I decided that I'd just have to try In & Out another day, and much earlier ... so I decided to use the time to drive along the coast for a few minutes.

I turned west on Imperial Hwy, and soon I could see the blue blue Pacific Ocean. It was so beautiful, albeit a bit windy. The waves are big right now due to the storm, and the water is more brown closer to shore and very blue out to sea.

I turned south on that coastal road, and the Palos Verdes Peninsula looked so clear (if you look at a map of CA, the small point that sticks out halfway between Sta Barbara & San Diego is the Palos Verdes Peninsula)... but behind the Palos Verdes Peninsula, jutting out so stark and clear, was Santa Catalina Island. It was a breathtaking view, and I drove slowly on the right-hand lane, close to the shoulder, so the cars could pass me up while I enjoyed the view on the drive. It was too chilly for this warm-blooded So Cal girl to open the window, so I just played my Christmas music, and drove.

Too soon, I got to the street called Rosecrans, and had to turn back to go back to work. ::::sigh::::

Now, there is a hill that runs parallel to the west facing beaches in the South Bay area of Los Angeles ... it's a small hill, yet there nevertheless, so when you go to the beach, you first drive up the hill, and when you reach the crest, you see the ocean before you (with a bunch of houses in front, of course). By the same token, when you leave the beach, you go up the hill, and when you reach the crest you see some of LA spread out before you. When I reached the crest of the hill, I could see Downtown Los Angeles very clearly in the distance (not an everyday experience here, let me tell you), and behind DT LA, our San Gabriel Mountains rose high, covered in snow. Ahhh, what a beautiful sight.

I love Los Angeles in December. :)

(ps... author's note: I really don't know if the sky is a "cerulean" blue, but it IS blue, and it sounded good at the time ;) )

You are so fortunate to have such beautiful scenery to look at. Here, we have snow, which is partially melted and mixed with black, dirty road salt. Thanks for taking me away for a few minutes. :D

We do that here in Illinois also, MJ. :p ;)

Sounds wonderful!!!! Beautiful.

Get a burger on the way home tonight. :teeth:

Ahhh I can picture almost exactly what you are talking about.... right down to Rosecrans... :) I wish I was in LA... :(

Sounds beautiful.... :)

:sigh: My 2nd favorite place to be :) (Colorado is number 1)

Thanks for the virtual trip MJ!

MJ - your lunch was way better than mine - thanks for the trip

I remember days like that when I lived in Redondo Beach.....

Was there snow in the mountains behind downtown LA. That would have really capped off the scene.

TLK -- Lots of snow!

It's beautiful right now. :)

WOW! No smog?! THAT would be a beautiful sight! Our weather was great today too. We're bracing for tomorrow though!
Beautiful narrative - thanks for sharing!

:) Thanks for the drive...I LOVELOVELOVE LA too. (and I'm a die-hard NY'er ;))

I had fun just reading your description of your outing today. Oh, to be able to drive up a hill and see a blue ocean. Must be nice :)
