Lunch box drinks

We do reusable water bottles. I think they have Embark ones from Target and the only time they've had trouble with leaking is if they don't get the lids on correctly.

They get milk at school and I tell them if they are still thirsty, visit the water fountain.

We bought these bottles when my kids started 4-K. http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-14...k-kids-kaleidoscope-6-pc-water-bottle-set.jsp

They're the perfect size for lunch box and also bookbag or general use. We typically use 3/day. Each kid has one in their lunch box, one in their bookbag and uses another for sports practice.

We liked them so much we also bought a set for DH and myself.

ETA: 2 rising 1st graders. They've used these bottles for the last two years.

The Thermos Funtainer drink containers are fantastic. Walmart has the least expensive price (about $13), but they're sold at Target and Toys R Us as well. They don't leak, and the insulation helps to keep drinks cold. I freeze an ice cube tray with milk. I throw a few frozen milk cubes into the container with her milk. The leftover milk is still cold when she gets home at 4:00. Buying milk at school would involve standing in a 5-6 minute lunch line, and losing that amount of time to eat.

My DD takes a water bottle and a drop in (Crystal Light). She doesn't like to use the refillable bottles since it's going in her backpack and she's worried it will open and get all over her stuff (they don't use lockers at her school). She's 15.

Funny thing is that until the school started with their whole "this is banned" crap I never sent in soda- as soon as they started trying to dictate what you could feed your own child that is when I sent it in-they never ever took it away or called home. My friends daughter brought marshmallows for a snack one day and her teacher took it away- the mom went up to that school and threw a fit, basically told them unless they were going to provide her with snack everyday then she would send in what she had at home for the kid for snack. They never took it away again!

I don't send anything. They can get milk if they want to. They usually get water. The school ha s pitchers of water and glasses available in the cafeteria.

Wow. There's no school around here that I know that would allow that.

Our high schools have block scheduling and your lunch is built in to either block 3 or 4, depending on the class. There would be no way to avoid having a lunch. There is no additional class offered during that time period.

Water only. My school has a water-only policy, so they can't take juice or other drinks (but we don't give them those anyway at home). I'm buying them all RTIC cups today, actually, so that they can have ice-water all day at school.

in the cafeteria they can buy milk (2%, skim, and skim chocolate), lactose-free milk, and soy milk.

Before someone asks, this is a public school in a very low-income area (more than 51% of the students get free/reduced price lunch).

ETA Sorry - I didn't read your entire question. My kids will be going into grades 2, 4, and 5.

This is INSANE! Do they police the food too or just the beverages? I find it sad that schools think that chocolate milk which is made of sugar and ARTIFICAL flavors, is better than say a Honest Kids Organic juice pouch.

If they are not banning "Lunchables" they should not be banning organic juice! Talk about government control over people's lives! I bet most of the cafeteria food is processed crap.

Plenty of hs kids do not have a lunch period here. They just eat during classes. Some allow it and others they just sneak.

I only had one teacher in first grade take away a snack. I threw a couple of Hershey kisses in and she would not let my so eat them

Parents drop off fast food all the time. The government controls over nutrition only apply to what they serve.

In the younger grades they would ask for healthy snacks but would not police it at all

Any beverage can be consumed at meal times but only water could be left out on the desk all day.

All of my kids are grown, but I'm gathering from this thread that schools now allow kids to have water bottles in classrooms? I wish that had been allowed when mine were in school, or even when I was in school!

I am glad I no longer have to deal with the food police in the cafeteria. Over 20 years ago (prior to all these restrictions,) a cafeteria worker took it upon herself to contact me with a complaint that my son was packed a Nutri-grain bar instead of a sandwich everyday. She informed me that he needed to have a PBJ on white bread, which would be cheaper. Of course, I politely told her to mind her own business and my continued to eat Nutri-grain bars.

Same here. But it was built into the schedule even before they started block scheduling.

My son has always been allowed to carry a water bottle according to policy. However, where I taught, it was up to teacher discretion. In the cafeteria, they do keep a hydration cart so kids can get some water with their meal. There have been studies on hydration and brain function that support allowing kids to drink water throughout the day.

I do a frozen juice box and a bottle of water for all three kids. The juice box keeps their lunches cold till lunch time. I tried the reusable water bottles with my two older kids and they lost them on the bus or left them on the playground. I also stopped buying lunch boxes they just forgot to bring them home all the time, so now we brown bag it.

Its her choice, she goes a full day of school- she wanted to take more classes than her schedule would have allowed if she had a lunch period so she opted to take a class she wanted and no lunch.

Schools in my state would not be able to do that - students must have a lunch period. You can't opt out of it.

Also, lunch is never the same length as a class period - it's built into a class. A lunch would go to lunch, then the entire class. B lunch goes to 25 minutes of class, 30 minutes of lunch, 25 minutes back to the same class. C lunch does the class then lunch. Students would then start the next class period at the same time. Even the high schools with block scheduling have the lunch built into a class period.

The only person who I know who can skip lunch to double up on classes is Hermione Granger.

I went to Costco yesterday and they had their 100% juice boxes (8 ounce) on sale. I think it was 36 boxes for $6.99 (normally $9.99). I got 2 of them. I may go get more and just stock up. We have a basement pantry that has room for a small stockpile. That will cover 2 kids for almost 2 months.

They take a reusable water bottle they keep at their desk, a small bottle of water for lunch and either a juice box or milk for snack. It's excessive I know, but their school doesn't have ac so if it's a hot day out they drink a lot. Also the lead tests on some water fountains in their school came back high so I told them no drinking out of the fountains at school.
They are going into second grade.
