I don't think MLMs will go away any time soon. Some people can make a good amount of money, some are only doing it for hobby money anyhow. Not all are crazy full of money hungry people either and not all are awful in terms of the ratio of product sold to consultant recruiting or bad types of goods sold. People certainly seem to like Scentsy a lot. The big danger with MLMs is the promise they tend to sell potential consultants, if their business model relies too heavily on recruiting and not really caring about the product any longer and yes if they are severely taking advantage of people below them.

Very few make anything. The statistics on every MLM can be found on google and it's grim for each and every one of them. The combination of monthly fees, monthly minimums, and low commissions pretty much doom anyone that doesn't have a huge downline.

The biggest problem with MLMs to me is they prey on stay at home moms. The theory behind this seems to be that since they are currently making $0/hour, they will be okay making way below minimum wage. Unfortunately, they seem to be at least somewhat correct.

I understand. I guess the definitions of make a good amount of money vary person to person so you're not wrong. The one who does wine makes a good living for what she considers, she's been invited to Italy next year. Another one who does Scentsy (well I've unfollowed her on FB too much clogging up my news feed) makes a good hobby out of it but isn't meant to be a primary source of income or close to it. The spice, herb, oil one I mentioned I think you'd make the least amount in general of the ones I personally know of because of their very specific target audience. It's expensive to sell the product and because of that few people have taken up becoming a consultant at least from the parties I've been too and had conversations with with the sister of my friend. They spin it like you can do it strictly part time but realistically part-time you'll be in the negative and full-time you may still be that way. But like I said that particular one is the one with the least opportunity of the ones I personally spoke about.

The stay at home moms is def. a target of MLMs in general. I agree it's a big problem but I do know a few moms who are only interested in small money (maybe just grocery money or money to offset a want service like streaming but not a need). But working to the bone just to get that small money tends to be the issue. If your effort is small and your pay is small you're less likely to see an issue with it but boy if you're putting in the hours and getting just about nothing back yup that's a big problem and if your financial offset doesn't make sense you would want to reexamine doing it. MLMs have a bad rep generally but it's for a good reason, no doubt.

I’ve always marvelled that new recruits can’t reason this out. Have they never heard of an MLM before? Is the structure being hidden from them? Do they all believe they have enough people in their circle who are recruitable to make it work? Heck, the market penetration alone is an issue even if you’re selling a legitimately good product. If you already know several people who are selling it (all of whom are trying to recruit you) who is left wanting to buy it that doesn’t already have a seller?
