Has anyone ever had their luggage damaged before it was delivered to your stateroom (or delivered to the port at the end of the cruise)? If this happens, is this just a "tough luck" situation (meaning Disney is not responsible for any damage)?

Thanks for any input!!

I don't think airlines or cruise lines will pay for damaged luggage, lost luggage yes. They consider most "damage" to be normal wear and tear.
I've never had a problem, but I have always traveled with Delsey hard sided luggage. Delsey guarantees it to resist damage for life, so they would repair or replace it for free. I've had it for nearly 25 years, 6 cruises, a trip to Houston and St. Louis every year for the last 25 years, 5 trips to Canada, it just keeps on going.

I don't get softsided luggage, just tears too easily. But it is the rage, I went shopping for a hard sided suit case for my son, and almost no stores carry it anymore.

I travel with the soft-sided luggage myself and have only had one real problem back in 2001. We flew down on US Air and evidently someone else wasn't as careful as we were with their shampoos & stuff. When I got my big bag it was completely soaked on one side.

Thankfully the way I packed it didn't hurt anything. A. We do the smaller bag inside the larger bag for that extra suitcase coming home - so most of my stuff was in the little suitcase & B. We had bought our snorkel gear with us and the fins were on the side that got wet and stopped it from getting into the rest of the stuff. Showed it to US Air on the way out -- they said they would put it on report and to stop in on my flight home. Got to the hotel and emptyed the suitcase and washed it. Permantly stained... yuch.

On the flight home - I stopped by the baggage office and was told -- just bring back to them after I got home at the closest airport (LGA or JFK) and they would take it and either fix it or replace it. My flight home was on 9/08/01 -- after what happened you couldn't get near an airport and it no longer mattered to me :sad2: . I ended up just throwing it away.

So -- if you're luggage is damaged -it's possible they will reimburse you for the bag.

We had a samsonite hard side that either DCL or the airlines damaged. We don't know which and didn't discover it until after we got home. Just tossed it and got some new cheep luggage (it seems to last just as well as the way more expensive stuff an you don't feel to bad about tossing it if you have to!)

I went shopping for a hard sided suit case for my son, and almost no stores carry it anymore.
A reason for this in the past couple of years is that hard sided luggage generally weighs more than those "generic black roller bags and airlines generally have an over weight surcharge. Since the suitcase is heavier to begin with you have to put less in it to keep it underweight. Oh yeah, and most of us Americans would prefer to lift as little weight as possible. (as an aside: there are only two things in my house that get immediatly repaired or replaced when broken: the microwave and the garage door opener - EVERYTHING else can wait (ok, maybe the fridge and freezer would be replace right now too:) )
