saw some checking into the resort today...but instead of luggage, they had four medium-sized totes.

Good idea?

I assume the OP means Rubbermaid totes.

I have read before that when you are packing the car for a trip that using totes is much more space efficient than suitcases. I haven't embraced trying it though.

Yes, for our Xmas driving trip, it was not supposed to go that way. 😊
we packed our regular suitcases, and I guess shopped more than we (or i) thought, we had to go purchase two large ones to come home. I’m thinking of using those to pack next time. They sure fit a lot !

several years ago when we were doing a cruise/wdw trip we got one of those inexpensive footlockers (like kids use in dorm rooms). it was great for bringing back the souvenirs-esp. a couple of dozen bottles of various liquors we bought when we were in the different ports:drinking1we used clothing to wrap around bottles, and it was great for the odd shaped/sized souvenirs. added advantage-one piece of luggage that goes WAY over the weight max for an airline ends up hitting you with 1 overage fee vs. paying it for multiple suitcases you are only over by 5 or so pounds each.

I think it's brilliant!

We fly to Florida, but have been known to cart odd-shaped things in sturdy laundry baskets when driving to visit family up here.

I would definitely consider totes if I lived close to WDW. - Everything would line up perfectly and there'd be no "trunk Tetris" packing the car.

We pack in bins when doing road trips as well as when camping. Easier to fit in the car and everything stays clean and dry. We also pack one small bin with a change of clothes for everyone for any hotel stops so we don’t have unpack luggage. When we fly we use suitcases.

I think if you own DVC, you are allowed to leave some things in storage there.

Owner's Locker is an outside company that people who own DVC or other timeshares in the Orlando area utilize to store items they don't want to haul back and forth on vacation. Owner's Locker delivers and picks up their totes from the resorts.

We drive a truck to WDW and we use totes to put our luggage in the bed of the truck.
we strap down the totes and it helps protect from the weather.
It is easier to load as well, especially a large rolling tote.

So, yeah, been doing this for about 5 years now.

It started a way back when we had a trip with a loaded 3 row SUV, and not much space for luggage. I had a cargo carrier on my trailer hitch. Not sure of the weather, I though perhaps I will pick up a couple of the rubbermaid tubs. We loaded the clothes and some food items in the tubs. It worked great!

Today, most of our travel is car related. We pack differently depending on the situation.

A long weekend, with only 3 or 4 of us, we each have our own suitcase.

A week long trip when we will be making multiple hotel stops. When we do that, we tend to have one overnight bag with all the toiletries for everyone, and then one clothing bag per hotel. This way we do not have to unload everything every time.

We are DVC, so for those week long trips, we pack the tubs. The tubs are so easy, and quite frankly, less noticeable in the back of the SUV. They attract less attention when we stop for a meal or for some other reason. They are easy to bring up to the room They stack nicely when full, and they stack very nicely when empty. Once we arrive, we unpack the clothes, and whatever food we may have brought, and stack the bins in the closet, with plenty of room to spare. We do the same when we go to visit family.
