How long does this usually take? Our flight lands around 6pm, hoping to get kids to sleep not to late.

The stated time, that is generally correct, is 3 hours after checkin, not after you land. So in your case after 9 PM. You could either pack what you need for the night and the next day in your carry on and then ask when you check in to hold your bags until the morning or collect your luggage at baggage claim and bring it with you to the ME bus. If you choose to wait until the morning for luggage delivery also put the Do Not Disturb sign out on your door.

Will they leave my luggage outside my room if I ask? If I ask to hold to morning, will they deliver to my room or do I have to pick up?

Where are you staying?
No, I don't believe they will leave it outside your room.
In the morning you would have to call Bell Services and ask for it to be delivered to your room. You would need to tip. You need to be in the room when they come

Just thinking - I did online check in and won't be checking in again at the resort so how do they figure the time lol

I agree with pack what you will need in carry on. The next morning as soon as you are dressed, call for the bags. Don't wait until 2 mins before you want to leave. Although we have never called for our bags first thing in the morning, we have called mid morning and had to wait 20 -30 mins. Once in the evening at AKL, we waited well over an hour, almost missed an ADR at Boma.

I don't think I've ever waited more than 3 hours for my luggage. When they have it, they'll knock on your room. If nobody answers and there is no "do not disturb" sign on the door, they'll open your room and leave it in there.
If there is a "do not disturb" sign on the door, they'll leave your luggage with bell services.
Or, you call tell the front desk to hold your luggage when you get there and you can pick it up in the morning or have them bring it to your room.

It just takes that long. We were just at WDW. Our flight was scheduled to land at 5:35 and I figured we'd arrive at resort around 7pm. Our flight was delayed by three hours and we arrived to resort at 10pm (landed at 8:48). Our luggage was delivered at 1:15am. I called bell services at 12:15am and they told me it could take up to five hours. The ME letter did say three hours from arrival at resort and I suppose they figure two hours to get to resort from landing on plane.

IMO, they tell you 3 hours after you arrive at your resort because it sounds better than saying 5 hours after your plane lands. Shorter time, less confusing. And I also think that if they said "after your plane lands", it could lead some people to believe that their luggage is being transported at the same time as them on DME, which is not the case.

Anyway, another option is to pack the things the kids need for bedtime in your carry on bag so you can put them to bed whenever you're ready. Then you or any other adult could wait up for the luggage. If your plane lands at 6pm, you'd get to the resort around 7:30pm, which means luggage delivery would be more like 10:30pm.

Or to fly in early enough where luggage, even if delivered five hours after landing, is still delivered at a decent time. Next time I will book flight that lands between noon and 3:00. Can't arrive too early either or you may be roomless for a while.

Arriving early isn't a problem, unless you want to get into that checked luggage. And you should never check anything you need for the first 24 hours anyway.

Well, off topic but, arriving too early and you can't get a room to rest or watch TV in (if one is so inclined). I am DVC and rooms aren't ready until 4pm (can check in earlier but my experience is that it's rare to get your room ready much before that 4pm...typical is 2-4pm). And I prefer to fly without dealing with lugging around bags and it irritates me to have slow line boarding and deboarding a plane due to everyone having to put up or take down their YUGE carry ons (also irritates me that those massive carry ons slow down security lines too). So, I check as much as possible and then when my room is not ready I don't have to mess with checking carry ons with bell services either. And I also like to not have to pick up my luggage on the carousel and drag it to the ME...would rather wait up late for bell services to bring it to me. Though I likely will book earlier, but not too early (landing at 1:30ish would be ideal) flights from now on (and even add in a couple hours padding in case of flight delay like we just had). All just MOO!

Agreed with the above. 3 hours. We learned this once, and never did it again.

What we do now, is we DO NOT use the luggage tags. Instead, we go get our luggage and bring it with us to the ME. Now, clearly this is a bit of a pain, but on ANY OTHER vacation, it's what we do. And it's so much better having our stuff with us, and not having to think about packing a separate bag, etc.

If I pick up my luggage and bring to ME will bell service bring to my room at my resort?

Is it the neon yellow luggage tag stickers that you don't use?

Exactly. Check your bags just like you would go anywhere. DO NOT put the yellow tags on your bags or they will be picked up. At MCO, there are 2 terminals: A and B. I can't remember where DME is, but that info is with the confirmation you got with the tags, plus everyone at the airport knows. It's huge.
After we get off, we go get our suitcases at the regular carousel then take all our stuff straight over to the Magical Express. Which even as I'm typing this, I am getting excited!! (we leave to go to WDW in 2 days. yay!). Anyway, you will be SO HAPPY to have your stuff with you. I don't get how people deal with the luggage pickup.
Of course, we never go to parks the first day so that's why it's important we have our stuff with us.

Good luck!!

Thank you for all your help! Have a magical trip!!

On the other side, I don't get why people go get their own luggage if they arrive during luggage delivery times. Getting luggage on a trip is akin to the 7th layer of hell for me. One of the reasons Disney is high on our list of vacation destinations is the ME and Luggage service. I've never needed a single thing in my bags that I check and I don't even pack 24 hours worth in my carry on bag. Just 1 change of clothes to go to the park. 99% of the time I'm off in the parks and by the time we return to the room, our bags are there waiting for us. I'm still waiting on when this service is offered when I go home so I can skip baggage claim there too

I totally agree with @AngiTN DME luggage delivery is a huge benefit to us. And it annoys me all the folks that drag everything to the bus. It slows down the whole process when the driver has to unload bags from under the bus at each stop.
To each their own.
2 days to go !!!
