Luggage tag question

I received the luggage tags that match my magic bands. Not sure if these are the tags for the magic express or not, I thought they were yellow. If these aren't the ones when should I get the tags for the magic express?

The tags that match the magic bands are just regular luggage tags that you put your name and address on for identification purposes. The DME tags look like the tags the airlines put on your luggage to indicate which airport your luggage is headed for except they're yellow and indicate the resort your luggage is headed for. When is your trip? If it's less than a month, I would call DME (not Disney) to make sure you have a reservation.

Do they come separate from the magic bands?

I am on a crusade... pointless as it may be... to get Disney to eliminate the luggage tags that they send you in the magic bands box. It causes so much confusion that they send you promotional tags, and tags that you actually have to use. They would never send you promotional magic bands that look nice, but don't function.... so why do they do it for luggage tags. I would bet that a large percentage of the luggage that DME "looses" or "delays" or "takes forever to get to my resort" have the wrong tags on them.

(Yes, I know why they send out the non-functional ones.. they are free promotional tags that Disney doesn't even pay for.)

Source? You know that they have changed those tags (which as always are ONLY sent out with packages, NOT with room-only or DVC reservations)? They are a perk for a package. Not sure why one would want a perk to go away.

Now, I imagine the place they could change is in the way they communicate things.

I'm confused as to why you think the Disney luggage tags don't function. They serve the purpose they are intended for : identifying who the piece of luggage belongs to. All checked luggage should have such a tag ( not necessarily a Disney themed one, of course) with the name and contact information of the owner on it. How else to determine which of the 50 black suitcases being spit out by the conveyor belt is yours?

If you don't want to use the tag, give it to someone else or throw it away. Believe it or not, there are some people who don't fly often, and may need one. Or who want one. There is no way you can confuse them with the big yellow ME tags that come in a letter identifying them and providing instructions on their use. If you are confused, Google images of ME yellow tags will give you unlimited photos of what they look like.

If you still are upset that they are sending you unwanted luggage tags for suitcases that you already have ID tags for, stop buying package vacations and just do RO reservations. Problem solved.

Really? No way to be confused about the tags? Check these forums. There are questions about it daily. Yes, they do serve a porpose, but a small one, compared to the number of people who seem confused.

Nowhere does it tell people to use those plastic tags as DME tags. People are always going to be confused about something. There is plenty of info out there.....they just need to choose to find it and understand it.
Let me give you an example......There I was, in the bus line at MCO, waiting for my DME bus to arrive. In the line next to me was a fairly large group/family. They had their checked bags with them...about 7 or 8 bags. I stood there and watched them stand there, affixing the yellow DME tags. I quietly tried to explain to them that the tags weren't needed at this point. Well......the dad stood upright and told me to mind my own business, who was I? An expert? Said that they knew exactly how to use the DME tags! They were needed to get them on the bus!!! Well, I am kind of an expert, at least where DME is concerned. So, I apologized for bothering them, and stepped back. A heated discussion ensued as they realized they didn't have enough tags for the bags. I mean, seriously? If they had done their homework, they would have known what they were doing. But no, they made assumptions...and had it all backwards.

Those plastic luggage tags go only to those with packages booked. And I don't believe that is says anywhere, in that packet that they get, that those tags are for DME. That's why these forums are so good...we get to help people out, so that they do know what they're doing. The worst that can happen is that they put those tags on, and assume that the bags will show up in their rooms. But the bags will go to the luggage carousel, then to the unclaimed luggage area. DME will find them there, at some point.
I'm just curious as to why anyone would get that confused though....they should also get the yellow DME tags mailed to them. And the info in that mailing is pretty clear as to how to use the tags.

If everything was so easy, and people would just follow the instructions, then these forums wouldn't exist. Look around, there are dozens of luggage tag questions out there. You are correct, it should be easy, and it is easy, for you and me, but the evidence is that it causes more confusion than some other things.

In my experience Disney has always sent "decorative luggage tags" with a package, we have several from Disneyworld and one set from Disneyland. For years they came with the info package that contained the mini golf vouchers and planet Hollywood discounts and such. Now they come with the MB but again only if you book a package.

The entire DME package comes separately including the luggage tags and detailed instructions on DME and the tags.

I think Disney assumes folks will read the literature and use both tags as they are intended.

Yes. We got an envelope with a booklet in it called "Disney's Magical Express" (maybe about 5x7?) and the yellow tags are tucked inside. Read the book! There's lots of good information in there and some nice stuff. We were planning on playing mini golf and didn't know there would be free vouchers. :) We got one yellow tag per party member but when I called they promptly sent me more.

Aren't luggage tags (Disney branded or not) kind of a common item that people use when traveling? Both DH and I had luggage tags on our bags before we started going to Disney (and neither of us fly often). I really don't think most people get confused as to the promotional tags' purpose. They are clearly regular luggage tags, meant to be used for identification in the case the bag is misplaced. Also, the literature doesn't indicate anywhere that they are to be used for DME. I like getting them...we've moved 3 times in the past 10 years and it's nice to have gotten the free tags to attach to our bags.

1) No.
2) We often see "late" delivery of bags with the proper tags.
. . . we see deliveries up to 5-hours after a plane lands
. . . if the plan lands after 10:00pm, sometimes we don't see the bags until 4:00am-6:00am
3) It is just a matter of when the bags come off the plane and are placed in the rolling cages.
. . . each family (set of tags) has their own rolling cage
. . . once the bags are loaded into the cage, the cage gets a plastic seal, so we can see if the cage was opened
. . . cages are staged and then loaded onto a small delivery truck
. . . the truck goes to as many resorts as necessary and unloads
. . . sometimes, the loaders wait until their are several bags going to one resort before loading onto the delivery truck
. . . this maximizes the delivery route and saves fuel
4) At the resort
. . . their are a limited number of people handling bags
. . . if busy with room deliveries, cages can wait for a long time before being opened
. . . additionally, absenteeism can cause long delays, as there are no back-up people for DME bag handling
. . . I have, personally, seen cages stand for 2-3 hours at the resort before being opened and delivered
5) If your bags are late, call the Front Desk. They can look up your bags tags on the computer, as they are scanned at every stage.
. . . at check-in at airport
. . . at loading into plane Cargo Hold
. . . at sorting at destination
. . . at loading onto delivery truck
. . . at delivery at resort
. . . at cage-opening by DME luggage CM
. . . at leaving DME staging area for delivery to room

Thanks for the info. I have had some not so great experiences with luggage delivery. I booked Pop for my 2 night stay (prior to OKW) last May. I found a great offer for POR-RR, so I called Disney directly. I asked about changing my resort, asking if the reservation number would remain the same. Absolutely the CM said. Okay....so I changed over to POR, seeing that the number was the same. So, according to everything I have been told by DME, I didn't call them to let them know of the resort change. I have been told, since DME started running, that as long as the number stays the same, no problem. Wasn't an issue for my dd and I...we traveled from Tampa, so had our luggage with us. But, my dd's friend was traveling from Texas. I had sent her the DME tag, paperwork, and her MB. We met her at MCO, and headed to DME. They scanned my MB...sent us to the Pop line. Um, no. I told them that I had changed to POR. They sent me over to the CMs at the checkin kiosk. They scanned my band again.....took them about 10 mins to find the POR reservation...then said it was a good thing we hadn't tagged any bags. Oh, but the friend had!!! So, the CM went over to the counter, and worked for another 5-10 mins. She returned, saying that everything would be fine now. And that if we changed resorts again, to cross out the old resort and carefully write in the new resort.....completely the reverse of what I had been told by many DME CMs!!!! She said that the baggage people looked at what was written on the tag vs scanning it many times.
We did all this at about 5:15, got to POR about 6:45, went off to watch the fireworks around 7:30. We returned around 10:30..no bags there. I called down, and was told that all the bags had been delivered that had come in via DME! But they would look for it. At 12:30 I called again. Why? This young woman had packed things she badly needed before bed. She has allergy issues and some of the things she needed wouldn't have been able to go in her carry on and she was assured that her bag would be there before midnight, by me. I explained to them that I was supposed to be at Pop but had changed the reservation about 45 days prior! Finally, at 1:15, the bag arrived. It had been sitting at Pop, since about 8pm!!! If that bag had been scanned, it should have been obvious that we were not at Pop, but at POR.
