Luggage storage near Disneyland

This Saturday (April 27th), my family and I are flying into LAX and arriving at about 3:30 PM. It’s complicated but I’m flying on Southwest and they’re flying on United, which means I am taking the luggage (because Southwest gives free bags and United doesn’t even do a free carry on). I am thinking about changing my flight to an earlier time and adding a day to my Disneyland ticket (I can change because it’s Southwest). I would be taking Disneyland Resort Express from LAX-Disneyland since my other family members will be picking up the car later. The problem is that I’ll have the luggage and our hotel isn’t walking distance to Disneyland (it’s Motel Moonlight). Where is the best place to put luggage for just a few hours? I’ve heard they’ll do it at the Disneyland Hotel for free, but is that reliable? I read that they have luggage lockers at the Desert Inn but can someone who isn’t staying there use those? I hope this makes sense as it’s kind of complicated.

I could be wrong, but I really don’t believe DLH will store your luggage unless you’re staying onsite. If I were you, I would go to your hotel 1st & drop it off. Then uber to the parks.

You can totally store at Desert Inn--it's in an area completely open to the public :) $1.50 (quarters only) for each locker. The locker fits a good-sized checked-size suitcase, so you might need 2 or 3 lockers depending :)

Thank you so much!!! Is this just in the lobby of the hotel?

No, it is at the side. The hotel parking lot is open to the south, and most of the rooms face south. When you walk past the lobby on your left, you will pass the pool room and some parking areas under the overhang. The room with the lockers is partway down this length of walkway, a room with a door that is usually open.
I’d still do a shuttle or an uber straight to your own hotel, though. Most places will store it for you until your room is ready. You could call ahead and ask.

I always drop my luggage at my hotel and they lock it up for the day and then head to the parks. All hotels I have stayed at do this for free.

I agree with this. Doing this will save you having to go collect your luggage since it will already be at your hotel. And at your hotel, someone will be watching over the luggage room (generally and there should be security cameras, too). If you really want to use the DI lockers, I would call that hotel to confirm that non-guests are allowed to do this. Just to be on the safe side...

Not to be the negative Nancy here...while it totally is a "hack" to use Desert Inn's lockers, I know the frustration it causes having stayed here a couple times. I have been there when all the lockers were full so a friend and I had to shove our suitcases into the last one. Luckily, on my last trip, one of the employees was super nice and let us store our luggage in a supply closet because of the lack of available lockers. Desert Inn will not hold your luggage like a traditional hotel because they supply lockers. There should probably be a change on the hotel's part where they lock the storage room down unless you are a guest there. Totally not blaming anyone for using that hack.

I agree with PPs, I would go to your own hotel first and they should store your bags for free. Then you don't have to wrangle all your bags back after the park.

I would read the luggage requirements with Southwest as well. It is my understanding that they allow 2 suitcases and a carryon before there is a charge.

I would take the luggage to the hotel and then uber to the parks.

Quite honestly, I don't think your family is being quite fair about the luggage. SW allows 2 checked bags and 1 carryon plus 1 tote/purse/bag/backpack without charge. However, if your suitcase weighs more than 50 lbs the cost is $75. And you'll be the only one lugging all of that around, which if I'm understanding correctly is the luggage of your whole family. Why don't they at least take one suitcase with them for the trip down? That's, what, about $30?

Agree with this. Seems like a big hassle to avoid a $30 luggage charge. If its just two suitcases you're bringing, I would still Uber to your hotel, store the bags there, and then Uber to DL. You'd only have to worry about schlepping the bags at the airport then.

This is good to know as I didn't know that they didn't store luggage.

YMMV but I have been told by the front desk that I must use the lockers the few times I have stayed here (even after informing them the lockers were full). Luckily, an employee walking by took pity on us last trip and opened up the supply closet for us. He was great!

Southwest gives free bags and United doesn’t even do a free carry on

Remember that you'll only get the 2 checked bags free.

Also, United totally allows free carryons UNLESS you book a certain fare. Assuming they got a decent discount on the tickets, have them use some of that discount to take their own bags(s).

And, having thoughts about this...I would NOT take the coach DLE. Take a shuttle van (Karmel or Super Shuttle) that will take you directly to your hotel, or get a rental car or taxi/rideshare. You are adding on levels of complication and difficulty that just shouldn't be there for the start to a vacation, IMO.

I'm also stunned that after all my time here I have never once heard of your hotel. Do you know how you'll be getting to and from the parks, and how much time or money it'll take?

You've never heard of it because it is quite far from the parks. OP, given your hotel's distance from DLR, I would definitely go directly there with all the luggage and have it stored there. So much easier in the long run.
