Luggage - hard sided or soft?

I have always had the soft luggage but I am curious about the hard sided cases.
Are they better or worse?

What does everyone have/ prefer?

I used to not care, but then every time I bought a soft sided one it ended up destroyed so I started buy hard sided cases.

I always go for hard sided luggage as generally they're lighter and more durable.

This! For large checked luggage I probably will never buy soft sided again. I got a Delsey hard sided cheap on-line and it has held up on my long international trips way better then my expensive soft sided Samsonite.

I have had excellent luck with my Tumi soft sided luggage. My pieces are in random geometric pink, purple aqua print. I get a lot of compliments! I really like the proliferation of pockets, and the prices when they are marked down at TJ Maxx!

You found tumi at tj maxx!? Shoot I am going to the wrong tj maxx! LOVE tumi so much. I have a messenger bag from them that's more than 10 years old and aside from the worn leather and the snag from my engagement ring last summer, you'd never know!

I even made my husband a convert after he saw how well the pieces hold up.

Wow, Delsey is an inexpensive brand now? When we bought our Delsey's 30+ years ago, they were about the most expensive brand out there.

I saw a tumi at TJMaxx just the other day.

Hard side without zippers for us for one reason: A hard side case with latches is more bed bug resistant than soft side, or a hard side with a zipper. Since I don't want any "friends" coming home with us, this gives me the most peace of mind.

This is exactly why we switched to hard sided light colored luggage. Much easier to see if something is crawling on it. Paranoid? Maybe. But like Disneefun said...peace of mind.
