Ive been cooking low sodium for about 7 years and low carbing for 2yrs. Sounds like what you're needing is something low carb(I'm assuming he has blood sugar issues.) "Sugar-free" isn't really sugar free. Carbs a loaded with sugars, it's a matter of picking the right ones. He can probably eat most anything that's prepared fresh, as long as it has no added salt or sugar. Steer away from potatoes, rice, pasta, and bread--very high in carbs, turns right to sugar. Instead, perhaps you can go heavy on the fresh veggies, 3-6oz meat, a small portion(1/4-1/2 cup) of whole grains like brown rice or whole wheat pasta. Careful with some fruits--bananas and watermelon are almost pure sugar. Peaches, plums, small oranges are better choices. Be aware that processed foods are LOADED with sodium. Canned soups, chili, cheese, anything that comes in a box, breads--look at the labels! you won't believe it! Especially be wary when eating out. Most restaurant food is high high high in sodium.
