My boyfriend and I have been trying to eat a lot less carbs (not doing Atkins specifically) and have both lost a lot of weight. We are trying to plan out our meals for our September trip and want to make sure that we stick to low carb eating as much as possible without feeling like we are missing out on all the yummy Disney treats!

Has anyone doing the low carb thing successfully made it through your WDW vacation without gaining weight while still having a few goodies?

We are planning on trying to coordinate meals so that we can have one meal with more carbs than we would usually eat as long as we balance out the rest of the day. For example, we are planning on bringing low carb breakfast bars with us for breakfast, but one day we are going to split an order of Tonga Toast (have never had it before). Then we will make sure we do very low carb the rest of the day.

Any dessert items like ice cream, pastries, etc we will limit ourselves to no more than one per day (and only on days where we aren't having a higher carb meal) and will split it.

With all the walking I'm hoping that will make up for the extra carbs, but I would love to hear from anyone who has done low carb at WDW successfully.

My fiance and I are both on the South Beach also...Before we left, we knew that we'd never be able to totally stick to it at the World, and to be honest, I didn't want to!
We wound up eating a lot of wraps or salads for lunch, and even though I think I got french fries once, I didn't eat more than a couple of them. I don't know about you, but once you go good-carb or low-carb, eating too many makes me sick. So even if I had WANTED to carbo-load, there's no way I would have been able to do it.
We had plenty of splurges, I didn't miss out on any of my favorite treats, I was just more picky about what I went for. In the end, I hadn't gained a pound and I think he had gained like 2 lbs, but they came right off when we got home.

Your body will tell you what it needs, and there's definitely plenty of lower-carb options! Don't sweat it, you guys will be fine :)

Just wanted to let you know, when I stayed at the Dolphin two weeks ago, we walked into Tubbie's Buffeteria, there was a big sign that said "LOW CARB" and it had the carb count--it was buffalo wings and a dipping sauce and celery. My friend who was on the South Beach diet grabbed the plated fare and licked her lips. She said it was great.

I agree with NHDisneyKid!

I've been on Atkins for the past 3 years and have been on 3 trips to WDW. I eat whatever I want while I'm there (I'M ON VACATION). But as soon as I get home, I start over with the induction period of Aktins.

I know your not supposed to do this, but it seems to work for me and I've been able to keep all the weight I've lost off and I don't feel guilty while I'm there.

But if your just starting out, I know alot of the restuarants are offering low-carb options.

;) :D ,

My sister in law survived a 9 day trip to Disney and did not break her Atkins diet at all. She said she didn't even feel like she was missing out. Ask your server at the restaurants you go to--a couple of times, the chef would make a special sugar-free dessert for my sister-in-law just for asking. They are very accomodating. There's always Turkey Legs (yum), buffets where you can load up on low carb items, and skip the rest, etc...

I just did a low carb trip to wdw. Here is what I did:

Breakfast: atkins muffin in hotel room (made them before we headed down).

Day 1: Lunch: Tusker house: Chicken salad, large water & fruit cup.
Dinner: Boma's: prime rib, chicken, pork, salads, fruit and sugar-free cheesecake for dessert (ask you waitress when you get there for that).

Day 2: Lunch: Japan: Sushi (definitely a treat but not too much rice)
Dinner: Beaches & Cream: prime rib sandwich w/o bun, fruit & sugar-free milkshake

Day 3: Lunch: Blizzard Beach: hot dog w/o bun (brought peanut butter sandwiches made on low carb bread and lots of water)
Dinner: Trail's End: salad, Lots of shrimp, chicken, ribs

Day 4: Lunch: MK CS: cheeseburger w/o bun, carrots, sugar-free brownie, large water
Dinner: Ohana's: salad, chicken wings, shrimp wontons (only ate the half with the shrimp in it), shrimp & steak with pineapple for dessert

Day 5: Lunch: Beaches & cream: sam as day 2
Dinner: Cape May: Salad, clam chowder (ate around the potatoes), Lots of Shrimp, chicken, 1 real brownie for dessert :D

Good Luck!

I live here and maintain a low carb lifestyle while visiting WDW (usually weekly) and staying on property for mini and extended vacations. It takes familiarity with selections at restaurants, but it can be done without much effort.

Also, if you want to venture a little way off property (outside the parks proper and the resorts, I mean) there is an Ale House quite near DTD (Hotel Plaza Blvd. to a left on SR 535-at the next intersection (SR 535 intersects with CR 535 to the left and Palm Parkway to the right) Ale House will be on your left. They have a very nice new low carb menu. You can actually build your own meal from a list of selections that include meat, topping, and sides. There is also low carb ice cream for dessert. It is a basic menu, but quite sufficient and considerably less expensive than dining on WDW property (including the counter service places).

Good luck to you and congratulations on staying with your healthy way of eating! :D

Whenever you go in WDW restaurant you just let the server or chef know......they will help you meal and leave without empty stomach and you wil said yummm....yuummmm........did you try Boma yet ????

I just want to say my wife and I are on south beach

we just spent a week at WDW...we were GOING to stick to the diet as much as possible, but that went out the window first day. Not that we ate like pigs, but we ate whatever we wanted

my weight was up 1-2 lbs after eating whatever I wanted for a week (ice cream, pop tarts, breads, pasta)

I figure whatever you eat gets walked off in the parks anyway

I really dont think it makes much difference, but thats just one mans opinion

I am doing the South beach right now and love it but when I go to WDW I will be on vacation from my regular life and plan to have whatever strikes my fancy. I will not be the one to not have the Mickey ears every day if I want to have one because of a life style change. I am more than willing to come home as do the strict phase for a week or so to get refocused.
