Alright I've had enough!! I am going to try a low carb diet. For me it is going to beso hard but I've got to try so I'm asking all my fellow disers who have done the diet to please post some of your idea and recipes. Thanks I hope I can do it because I am a carbaholic!!!

This is a recipe that I absolutely love for some reason. I don't measure, so I will do the best I can giving you directions (not to mention I am no Betty Crocker ha ha). :rotfl:

It is extremely low carb and I got it years ago out of an atkins book. I have modified it to my taste a lot (The original recipe calls for a sprinkle of chicken seasoning mix (the kind that comes with the cooking bags). It is flexible with almost anything and the gravy is awesome! One downside is it does not do well reheated or once cooled.

Cilantro Chicken (or cube steak is good too)

2-3 Pounds Boneless Chicken Breasts 0 carbs
Cillantro 0 carbs
1 block Cream Cheese 3-4 carbs per serving (if that)
Margarine 0 carbs
1 QT heavy whipping cream 3-4 carbs per serving
lemon juice
lime juice

In a frying pan cook 4-5 boneless skinless chicken breasts (you could broil or grill them for a healthier option)
Once they are done set aside
In the pan melt a little bit of margarine (like you would for making gravy)
combine cream cheese with melted margarine and stir around until blended add 1 carton heavy whipping cream. Stir in 4-5 squirts of lemon juice and
4-5 squirts of lime juice
Cilantro to taste ( I put a lot ha ha)

add chicken and stir until smooth and bubbly.
Eat right away.

Are you going to do a specific program or just start eating low carb? If it is the latter you are destined failure. You need to break your carbaholic nature by doing an induction program into low card eating.

Good Luck!

I disagree. I did Sugar Busters several years ago and lost 40 pounds and kept it off. Sugar Busters does NOT have an induction program, but the book teaches you which specific foods to avoid and why they will cause a gain. (I even ran their message boards for them for a LOOOONG time).

Best of Luck to the OP.

sugar busters?? never heard of it. Maybe I should check into it. Could you please give me some info?

I dropped 20 pounds quickly when I just tried to have a reasonable amount of carbs with a meal and cut out chips, pretzels, etc. At a picnic it would be a hot dog bun and skip the potato salad, chips, etc. That together with getting out hiking most weekends did it in no time. It really wasn't difficult after getting past the initial week or so. Good luck! :)

I was just going to try to eat low carb.

There are 2 ways to do low carb - the Atkins like way, which is pretty much no carb, you can eat fat, your body will get into a chemical state, works, but if you cheat AT ALL, it will fail, and low carb, low fat (like South Beach). Definitely get a book.

I have done low carb before and have been very successful. I really have no recipes, but if you get a hankering for something sweet, I suggest eating Breyer's Carb Smart ice cream in a tumbler with diet rootbeer added. Delish!!!!

I am a diabetic on only diet and exercise so far........I had to cut out alot of carbs but I was allowed 45 carbs per meal....I went to classes to learn the proper rationing of these carbs...A good book to get is Carb King and this tells you how many carbs, fats and alot of restaurants info too....
My dil went to weight watchers and basically the same program only she counts points and fats....
A good rule to follow is your plate....One half of your plate should be salads and veggies ...one quarter of the other side is protein and then the last quarter is your carbs....
I am on 30 carbs per main meals, and fifteen carbs for snacks...I have to have snacks in the AM and in the afternoon and then before I go to bed...it balances out my blood sugar rate..
My sister who is not a diabetic is on the same type of diet to lose weight.

Good luck in your quest for a healthier lifestyle

Sugar Busters is a LOT like South Beach, but came WAAAAAY before.

Basic premise is to eat less STARCH (not necessarily carbs as veggies are mostly carbs). When I read the book it was very motivating to me. Probably the best thing you can do is lots and lots of research as you are going at it, and tailor something to fit your own needs.

Gosh I'm so confused!!!

Awww. I didn't follow any plan, I just ate lean meat, and lots of veggies. I was careful about the veggies, some are definitely higher carb then others. I cut out all breads, pastas, potatos. I cut out catsup, lots of sugar there. I would eat some fruit, always fresh, never canned. Especially the ones in syrup!!! Watch your fruits too, some are way higher in carbs. If I wanted a snack, I ate nuts or the Breyers Carbsmart/rootbeer float. This self-made plan worked very well for me.

Even though I haven't read it, South Beach book is supposed to be very good. You may want to start there.

Oh, and exercise really is your friend:thumbsup2. It will boost your metabolism and make weight loss(if that is what you are looking for), go quicker.

Having done low carb for some time, there are variations between all the popular approaches.

You can choose one, but you don't really need to.

Low carb is defined medically as 40 grams of carbs or less per meal. You can drop it lower (as with Atkins initial phase of 10 grams or less per DAY) or not as you please.

Watch the fat. Seriously. Low carb is not synonymous with high fat. Use only "good fats" and sparingly. Read up on what is a good fat and what isn't.

Watch the type of meat you eat. Filet Mignon is fine, rib steak is not (too much fat). Watch the portion size of the meat. You should really be eating no more than 7 ounces of meat based protien, and less if you want to break it down into categories. 7 oz for some fish/shellfish, 6 ounces for chicken/pork loin and 5 ounces for beef.

Avoid all sausages, "burgers" and the like. Cook with skin on and bone in for flavor and moistness (particularly chicken) but do not eat the skin.

Bake and broil or grill. Don't fry, and remember that sauteeing is "frying." Braising can be good, but that usually is a method of cooking for high fat beef, so you won't need to do much of it.

Make leafy greens your friend. :) Mixed greens. Avoid iceberg lettuce. It has little value to you. Romaine is ok, but darker green leaf lettuces, and red oak, ect. are the ones you should shoot for.

If you are hungry eat more of the allowed food.

Avoid all wheat based products, all rice based products, white or brown for now. Pasta, potatoes, rice, legumes are all carby and need to be shunned until you get in the groove (and some until you reach your goal weight).

A very effective weight loss measure is to pay attention to your blood glucose levels (regardless of whether you are a diabetic or not) which spike hunger. Eat something (100 calories or less is a good goal) every three (ish) hours.

Look at some calorie amounts for the weight loss you want to achieve, but remember calorie counting is NOT the entire story, regardless of popular opinion.

Finding what works for your body is what will determine your success. What works for me (food wise) will not necessarily work for you. It takes determination and experimentation to learn what your body will need to lose weight an remain healthy.

The reality of weight loss is that it is a matter of eating healthy for your body, which entails achieving good cholesterol levels, good BP, good blood glucose, etc. It's much more than simply weight loss.

Good luck to you and if you care to, you can drop me a PM. I'm one of those passionate about healthy eating weight loss types!!! LOL.

I do low carb to control diabetes- I stick with under 3 servings of carbs a day. 1 serving of carbs is 15g. My endocrinologist told me for those carbs you do eat, a good rule of thumb is 3 grams of fiber per 100 calories because it the fiber prevents some of it from being absorbed.

Make sure that you are not replacing the carbs with calories from fats. That's a common mistake. You want to eat lean cuts of meat. Remember that carbs hide in a lot of places, the only food gropu that is truly carb free is meat. Carbs are found in many veggies and all fruit, however those types of carbs are different from the ones in grains (what you traditionally think of) so I would not worry too much about those.

Some ideas for some foods: Look for diabetic foods. There is a great pasta called Dreamfiels, although it has 45 grams of carbs, only 5 are digestible. Pasta can spike my sugar like none other, but I have absolutely zero issues with Dreamfields. If you like pasta that is a great one to eat.

Look to fill up with vegetables, lean meats, and fruits. Limit any kind of carb to one or two meals per day, and no more than one serving at a time. You'd be surprised how small a serving is, so I would measure it out.

If you want some great lower carb, weight-loss friendly recipes, check out theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com - this blogger had weight loss surgery and her hobby is cooking. She has won some cooking contests with some of her recipes.

I have made some of her crustless mini quiches that she calls "bites" and they are delicious!

I love George Stella's cookbooks. Great recipes, and easy to follow (because I am SO not a cook). He used to have a show "Low Carb and Loving it". He, his wife and two sons lost over 550 pounds collectively.

Here's his website:

I've been dieting since Easter and have lost 10 pounds. I refuse to give up carbs (I love pasta!), but I have cut way back on simple sugars.
