Well I took the laptop back and got the apple ipad2. Posting my 1st post with it and I love it. There are so many things it can do ihope it doesn't intimidate me. They were out of wifi so I got the 3G. Any helpful hints or what should I do next?

Excellent! It is a great portable device. We have one, but don't use it for much more than basic web surfing. Might have to pay small amounts of money for cool apps to do really cool things.

I know some real artists that have done some great work with an app that costs only five dollars.

Download the Kindle app to read Kindle books. You can get public domain books free from Amazon. Many public libraries offer "free" e-books through Overdrive, check with your local library.

Someone will have to explain how you can get on DIS chat with the iPad. I hear it can be done, but I have't done it yet.

If you have trouble mastering the iPad keyboard for lots of typing, you can buy a keyboard from Apple to attach to the iPad.

Have fun exploring!

Sorry to ask a really dumb question, but how do you get files on the iPad? I'm assuming through wifi or 3g.

The main reason I bought a netbook was for our Disney vacations, so that I could offload my videos and photos from SD cards nightly, then erase them and start again fresh the next day. My netbook has an SD card slot which is perfect for this, but from what I've read the iPad doesn't have any slots out of the box.

Is there any way to write to an iPad from an SD card?

There is a camera kit that you can get for the iPad.

I got it, and I *LOVE* it. There are 2 pieces. One will allow you to connect your camera to your iPad via the camera's USB cable.

The second one accepts the SD card directly. When you plug it in, it triggers an app that connects to your iPad, and allows you to select which pictures to transfer to your iPad. It also organizes them in folders by the date taken. It works really, really well. In fact, it saved my vacation, because when I went on the Med cruise last year, my SD card died on the last night of the cruise! Fortunately, I had been downloading my photos to the iPad every night, so I only lost a day & a half's worth of pictures.

As far as "regular" files are concerned, you have to have an app, like Pages, that is meant to process documents. When you go into iTunes, under Apps on your iPad, there's a place where you can drag & drop documents into those apps.

I *believe* you can also email documents to the iPad, but I've never tried that.

Or you can get an eye-fi card. That sends your pictures over-the-air directly to your Ipad via the eye-fi app

That's cool! Only thing is, don't you have to be in a WiFi hotspot for that to work? Great while I'm at home, but I'd hate to rely on it to backup my pics while on vacation... But it's still a cool idea!

After the last Firmware update to the Eye-Fi Card, you can now go direct to any PC or your IPAD/Iphone

Well those are two reasonable options. You would think an SD card would be something that they could put in natively, but these seem to do the trick.

I have a question , the service is through at&t, I know they put a bandwith for the internet, does this apply to the ipad as well? Thanks

2gb for $25 is standard on ATT. Verizon is a little different.

And I was surprised the iPad did not have a USB port. Still does not support Flash.

Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit costs $29.
The really cool "smart cover" is $39 or $69.
The wireless Keyboard is $69
Some pretty cool apps will cost a little extra, a few at a time and then some more.

Yup, the iPad is great, love it! But, you may want/need to throw some more money towards it.

Actually, if you get the camera kit, the connector for the camera USB cord acts as a USB port. I don't know if it's compatible with everything, but I know people who have plugged a keyboard into it.

Well that's the key issue, isn't it. Once you buy all that stuff, some of which you could argue it should have in the first place, the cost does rise. My netbook cost be $299, and got a free carrying case. :) It all depends on what your needs are, and whether you believe the added expense is worth it. For me, my netbook does the job just fine, but other seem to feel the iPad is a worthwhile investment.

I use my camera kit to plug in my audio mixer and have used USB headsets

what I am asking is As of May 2 ATT has put a cap on the bandwith for the internet. so if you go beyond the bandwith on the Ipad are they going to charge you more? I know the price is 25. I just did not make myself perfectly clear sorry.

I dont know if this will help you but I was trying to figure out how to watch a live trial and someone suggested using SWIFTER app it is free and it worked great. You can always try it.

If you are using 3G, yes. ATT will cut you off until you pony up more money for additional bandwidth.

ATT only capped home bandwidth on May 2. ATT started capping Ipad and other smartphone usage back in June of 2010. My Blackberry is capped at 5gb for data usage and 5gb for tethering.

i also don't really get the ipad...
they're not very widespread where i live (israel), but i did see one the other day (my nephew was given one by his high-tech company)..
it seems cute (though it's missing flash and all that), but for the price, geez, i could buy a laptop to end all laptops....
so i don't get it really...
