Out of nowhere yesterday I got a call from an 800-number I didn't recognize. Normally, I would have assumed it to be a telemarketer or political survey and ignored it, but for some reason I answered.

Turns out it's Delta Air Lines. They've changed equipment on our upcoming return flight and it is now overbooked. They offered us a free change to any other flight for that day and a $200 travel voucher for future travel.

Our new flight is 1 hour and 35 minutes later (originally $120 more than the one we booked or we would have booked this flight to begin with) and we have $600 in free airfare to use in the future! Thanks Delta!

You will want it confirmed in writing that everything took place as described. Did you get an email confirmation?

It is definitely convenient for the airline to work out the overbooking in advance instead of frantically at the gate at boarding time.

But you don't want to end up in a he said she said dispute over whether the vouchers were really included.

I have had this happen with Delta before. Don't worry that they won't stand by what you were told over the phone. You should be able to check your Skymiles account and see the vouchers listed there.

They emailed me the vouchers within minutes of the conclusion of the phone call. Three separate emails, one for each member of my party, which stated the recipient was being issued a $200 travel voucher.
