Love Harry Potter but hate motion sickness...

I get really bad motion sickness from some of the attractions at Disney. I can't do Star Tours, Space Mountain, Mission Space or Flight of Passage. I love roller coasters and seem to be able to handle those if they are not in the dark.

Which attractions should I avoid at Universal if I want to stay away from motion sickness? A lot seem to be motion simulators which is disappointing.

I suffer from extreme motion sickness but I still went on all the Harry Potter rides. I highly recommend either taking meclizine daily starting a week before your trip or getting a prescription for a scopolamine patch. They both really help. I'm such a Potter fanatic that I was willing to suffer a little to enjoy the ride.

There are various lists around the internet that rank the rides based on motion sickness risk . Here is one :

I only suffer very mildly from motion sickness (the only thing at Disney that gets me is Mission Space). I do have issues with Forbidden Journey though and so would echo the above suggestion to take some medication so that you can enjoy it. The other rides I have problems with at Universal are The Simpsons (that's the worst of the worst) and sometimes Spider-Man and Transformers. I'm fine on Escape from Gringotts.

I get sick on those same rides at WDW. I am perfectly find on Gringotts. However, Forbidden Journey does make me sick on the screen parts, so I just close my eyes on those parts. You need to ride with someone who can tell you when to open your eyes.

I am not a roller coaster fan, although I "faced" my fears on Toy Story Roller Coaster at WDW because I just had to try it, Gringotts I am fine, Foridden Journey, the beginning bothered me, closed my eyes in the beginning, some parts bothered me a bit, but for the most part was fine. Did Gringotts, 2 trips, love it, Forbidden Journey, (faced my fears) both trips, glad that I did it! Hated Simpsons:scared1:, but then again, both adult DS hated it too and they do every roller coaster anywhere!

I had to close my eyes a few times during the screen portion of FJ but loved the rest. Dh got dizzy though. But, Minions and Simpson’s bothered me. There is absolutely no way to know how you’ll do on a ride. It’s too personal. Just try them. It’d be terribly disappointing to miss them out of fear. Maybe try something like Bonine. Experiment before your trip to see how it makes you feel. Some people do well taking it at bedtime the night before. Even though it’s non drowsy, it can make you a bit sleepy.

The trans-derm scop anti nausea patch is so worthwhile... being able to ride whatever without worrying is lovely. It is prescription in the US, but is non-drowsy, can be used with alcohol, waterproof, etc. Read to put a little round bandaid over it which worked perfectly.

I would avoid Forbidden Journey. I am fine with any ride at Disney except Mission Space on opening weekend did me in for the entire day. FoP and Star Tours I can do but I don’t feel well afterwards for about an hour. FJ we did at a sneak preview pre HP opening and that one ruined me for an entire day as well.

I'm very prone to motion sickness - the rides that bother the OP bother me too. The last time we went to Universal I got a prescription for the patch, and it was the BEST thing ever! No motion sickness, no drowsiness or other side effects (at least until I was done). Super easy to use, I forgot it was on there.

I can do Star Tours, Space Mountain or Flight of Passage without issue ... and I have vertigo.

Forbidden Journey hurt me bad the first time, the second time I tried again and closed my eyes and still hated it. I don't ride it anymore.

I am very prone to motion sickness but do fine on roller coasters. I do terrible on motion simulators, which like you said is what majority of rides are in Universal Studios. I tend to just stick to the Harry Potter rides, the Hulk ride, ET, Men in Black, Revenge of the Mummy, and Rip Ride RockIt.

I get sick with all the same rides at WDW. I find the patch to be a lifesaver at Universal. The first time I rode Forbidden Journey, I took Bonine, and I got SO sick that I about tossed my cookies as I came off the ride. I'm a huge Potter fan, though, so was determined. The next time we went, I got a script from my MD for the patch--it was life changing. I was able to ride everything I wanted without a hint of nausea. The only drawback were the moderate side effects of dry mouth and pupil dilation. They were tolerable, however, and I know many don't have any issues.

I can do Star Tours as long as I don't ride it more than twice in a row back to back. I have no issues with Mission Space (green only) or Space Mountain. FOP makes me dizzy, but it is tolerable--- twice in a day is my limit. Sadly, although I love Harry Potter, I got pretty dizzy on Forbidden Journey. I was definitely more dizzy than on any of the Disney rides, and I had to sit down for a few minutes after riding it. DD and DH wanted to go back and immediately ride it again (we had express pass), but there was absolutely no way I was going to ride it a second time. Sad, because it is a great ride. It tilts you back a few times and I am about positive that it was that back tilt that made me really dizzy. I had no issues at all on Gringotts.

Universal does rely very heavily on screens. A lot of their rides are basically omnimovers, but with screen sequences. So, you are in a ride vehicle that is moving, but it stops at screens where you feel like you are in the action. Most of them don't bother me and I do like universal-- but I do get tired of everything being on a screen.

My wife gets motion sickness pretty badly as well. We just returned from our first full Universal trip. She LOVED Gringotts and even rode it a second time. But Forbidden Journey about killed her. It even made me woozy and that’s seldom a problem for me.

Forbidden Journey is a no go. My mother has bad motion sickness and was about to throw up when she got off the ride. It can really make you feel sick. Other rides like Simpson’s or Minions can make you very motion sick. I don’t have motion sickness and felt like dying and passing out after I got off Simpson’s. Never again!

I've been thinking about trying the patch this time .. Can you tell me how bad the side effects were for you? I've heard they can be pretty bothersome.

It's been a few years since I've used it, but I found the side effects to be annoying, but not intolerable. The dry mouth was pretty bad, but I just made an extra effort to hydrate intensely. The pupil dilation was mostly just irritating--the fact that I couldn't read my phone or a book (i'm a big reader, so this was annoying), b/c I couldn't get my eyes to focus...of course since then, I've, shall we say....aged....a bit, and now can't focus my eyes on a book on a good day, unless I have readers, so I can't WAIT to see how bad the dilation effects are this time around! lol

I'm a big reader too and that is one of the side effects that I was wondering about. Is it as bad as when you get the drops at the eye doctor? haha I thought maybe I should get a patch and try it out before I go to see how it affects me.

Not quite as bad as when the drops are at their peak--more like when you are in the process of returning to normal, after peak effect. I will say that you'll definitely want sunglasses to protect your eyes if you end up with that side effect.

When my friend used them, she said the only noticeable side effect for her was her heart racing for a few minutes when she put on the first one. This did not recur when replacing them every 3 days (or when drinking, either).
