Lounge chair etiquette

We are planning on spending more time at our resorts (AKL and Dolphin) this year. I have always had bad luck in getting a lounge chair mid-day. People seem to plop their towels down on chairs early in the day and expect to have them available whenever. Can you ask the resort help for more chairs or have you just used a chair that has been staked out by someone if they are no where to be seen? Just curious as to how this all works! Thanks in advance. Beachfan

We rarely go to Park's anymore and spend all our time at the pools. I go early and get a table and chairs with umbrella and stake out the day. We may leave for a short time here and there. I really haven't seen that many people just put stuff down and disappear for hours. They might go into pool or to lunch.

A towel would mean nothing to me, I would just toss it aside and take the chairs. You can't hold a chair if your not there. If they left some personal items like some shirts or shoes, I would think they were in the pool and I would keep looking for another spot.

It's just my DD & I so I'm typically in the pool with her but still like a 'spot' for when I need to dry out (she's a fish & would spend our entire vacation in the pool :-)). I bring our own beach towels, so they're not the hotel towels, and we leave our shoes & cover-ups on the chairs.

I personally feel that if you are leaving the pool area (for a meal or to go back to your room or to a park) you should take your stuff and free up the space.
Definitely. And I'm hoping if I remove a towel, it's because someone did just that.

The "resort help" doesn't just magically have more chairs to put out for you.
Like the others, I try to determine if there are folks actually using the chairs and just enjoying the pool, or if the towels have been there for hours and no one has been around. If the latter, I will remove the towels.

At the Yacht Club last year there was a CM moving towels that had been left for more than an hour, which was great to see.
That pool was the worst for people reserving chairs. People would put towels down on chairs in the morning and go to the parks.

If it's just towels, I would move them to a spot near the chair and use the chair. If a person came back, the towels would still be there and you can give back the chair. Another guestimate on if the towels have been there all day or just recently - if you touch the towel and it's wet, chances are the person(s) are using the pool. If totally dry, placed in the morning and left there.

The past few trips we have designated pool days so I am up and out and at the pool before the ducks are!

I get us a table and grab a 5th chair as we all like to eat lunch and dinner together...yes pool day means sun up to fireworks. We have towels, a bag with goggles, refillable mugs, etc.....

My DH primarily spends time in the chair and my kids come and go. In the pool, out of the pool, in the pool, out of the pool, fill up mug, drink it, fill up mug, drink, back in the pool, eat, etc....

I do feel bad that we are not sitting in the chairs the entire time but we only leave the pool deck to get lunch and bring it back to the table to eat, aka we don't eat in captain cooks. Heck I go in and order and my kid says play ding dong ditch and leave me waiting for food to go back in the pool!

I would offer our chairs/table to someone but we may be back out of the pool in 15 min and then would have no where.

I have also gone to the pool in the afternoon and been able to grab one chair just to throw our stuff on. I don't want to put my bag or towels on the ground.

I would be mad if someone moved our stuff because we were swimming. But we do keep more then towels there. And when we are in the pool we are always with in eye shot of our stuff, I do bring my camera on occasion.

I almost wish they would rent chairs out, I mean not pay to rent but if I come up and say I need 5 chairs I'd get those chairs and an umbrella. This way no empty chairs would go to waste and when you are done, they go back.

You're using your table and chairs all day, even if you're not sitting in them 100% of the time. No need to feel bad. :goodvibes

What I find annoying is going down to SAB a half hour after it opens and 3/4 of the chairs/tables are full of towels, yet there are only a handful of people in the pools. Some people grab loungers "just in case" then they don't give it another thought and never even make it down to the pool area.

Agree! I have seen that many times. There are maybe 30 people in the pool, but 100 empty chairs being "used" with just towels on them.

Monorailsilver, you are not the people we're talking about. Being in the water or at the counter buying food, you are still "at the pool" & certainly are entitled to your chairs. When the whole family goes to a park, takes a rest in the room or goes to Disney Springs, they shouldn't be saving chairs at the pool.

What you do is fine. That's how it's supposed to work.
Now, if you tossed your stuff there and headed off to the park for several hours, planning to return at some point to use your table, that's where it's rude and inconsiderate. Using a table while you are at the pool, perfectly fine.

I was at SAB a couple of weeks ago. The pool was practically empty but almost every lounge chair had a towel on it. We ended up sitting in the chairs near the slide exit.

It comes down to just being considerate of other people. It would be awesome if the CM's could monitor unused loungers with towels simply sitting on them for extended time periods, but sounds like too much work for something that should just be simple. Personally, if we are at the pool, we have other things sitting on the chairs and if we are getting food..one person stays.
