I guess I just need to say this. I don't understand why it's always cheaper to fly Southwest out of Indy rather than out of Louisville. It's so much closer for us to fly out of Louisville but it seems the rates are always quite a bit higher. Although when I factor in driving to Indy (with gas prices what they are) and parking for a week, it's not worth driving to Indy. I just wish SW would have some really good sales from Louisville to Orlando. Thanks for listening!

Probably because they have seats on their IND flights that need to be filled. So its all about supply and demand. And on the other hand Louisville, has alot of demand so the prices are higher. Also SWA has a certain number of seats on each flight are cheap, once those are gone the hardly ever goes down again.

Thanks for the info. I didn't think about that. It helps me understand how it works.

Well there is some good news...we live in Louisville, but have made the trek to Indy numerous times to save $$$ on trips to MCO....I always figured it was cheaper out of Indy because there was dicount airline competition out of Indy (ATA, AirTran) and only SW and the legacy carriers out of Louisville.

Now that SW and ATA code share the Indy prices are pretty much stuck at $145 give or take a little....while Independence Air, AA and SW are running specials for $120RT out of Louisville through May, and Delta, NWA, etc are running $144 through mid september....we are going in early November so I have high hopes that we may snag a $120+ fare from here for a change....sure would be nice to skip the trip to Indy (that airport is a dump!!)

Most of my family is in Nashville and they fly RT for under $100 on SW specials (and Delta and AA usually match SW)....so every now and then when we have time to spend a night there on the way back we will fly out of there....but I would be REALLY happy to pay less than $150RT out of Louisville and avoid driving either place.

we are lucky to live in Elizabethtown--it's 2 hours to Nashville, which isn't a bad drive considering how much cheaper the fare is there (sometimes). I wish Louisville would drop that low, too!! Every now and then Cincinnati will have a good price, but those are few and far between....and flying out of Lexington? No savings there.

Last year I was able to get a wonderful rate of $135 round trip out of louisville. I wish I could have gotten that this year for my dates, which are the same as last year, but I was not able to. I booked through US air this year so I could use my frequent flyer miles.

I have noticed Independence Air running sale fares of 103.00 from SDF to MCO. I have yet to see my June dates, tho.

We are usually able to fly for around 125.00 pp, but, the cheapest I've seen this year has been more like 150.00.

In June we are flying out of Indy for the first time, since I got the Southwest "Ding" fare of 90.00, RT.

Luckily for us, DH works for a motel chain, so we can stay in Indy for 15.00 the night before our flight. We can leave our van parked there free, but parking at the airport only costs about 55.00/week, and I imagine a cab ride to and from the airport would cost about that. So we are parking at the airport.

We're still saving about 200.00 over flying out of SDF. I'll take the 2 hr drive for that.

Sometimes you can get a decent price out of Lexington, KY My DH recently booked a flight on Delta from Lexington to Orlando for Memorial Day weekend for $166 RT. He also checked flights out of Louisville and Cincinnati on Delta, SW, and USAir and they were all over $200 for the same dates.

I didn't know that Independence Air flew out of Louisville. I guess I'm just stuck on Southwest. We used to fly Delta until they went to their smaller planes and being the nervous flyer that I am, I like the larger planes. What kind of planes does Independence Air use? Do you like Independence Air? $120 would be a good price. By the time we add parking and gas to the $90 RT to fly out of Indy, it would be about the same as the usual SW prices out of Louisville. We'll probably be flying in September so I'll just hope the prices go down from SDF to MCO. I'm the OP. Thanks everyone for all the information.

I haven't flown Independence. They've only been here for a few months. I watched them for a while for our June trip, but, the last sale they had didn't extend through our dates. Then I got "dinged" and well.......

You can check them at www.FlyI.com

THe cheapest I've seen on SW out of SDF has been 59.00 pp/ 1 way. For 5 of us, that's 541.60.

One tank of gas to drive round trip (projecting for increased gas prices) 50.00 + parking (55.00) (which we would pay at SDF, anyway--except more $$).Out of Indy, our airfare for 4 is 360.00. We are still saving a bit of money. Plus, we are going to Indy a day early and spending some time at the zoo (which my grandkids love!)..For us, flying out of Indy this time was cheaper.

I haven't flown Independence either yet....but I will fly any body once!! Hey I have flown on airlines that should have listed the fare I got as "Cattle Class"....we were crammed into the plane so tight you could barely breathe....but hey I can do anything for 2 hours if it will get me to WDW!!

Have not heard anyone complain about Independence yet either.... if they extend their low fares ($120 all in) through our Nov dates I would fly them in a heartbeat.

I went to their website and their planes are the small ones with 50 seats. Their mission statement sounds great but the last time I flew in a 50 seater, I said no more of that. I'm afraid I can't get over that feeling to save money though! I wish I could.

We are flying out of Louisville it was $40.00 more expensive than Nashville and about the same amount of drive, but some of our party is driving from Eastern Kentucky and we decided to meet in the middle and fly together.

Nashville would have 95.40 - Louisville is 135.20 both prices are for Southwest. We leave June 8th.

We're leaving the same day--June 8th!

We've always flown Delta. They fly direct at good times for us. I've never been able to find a cheaper fare on SW. Not for lack of trying!! Does IA fly direct? I thought they had only connecting flights to MCO? I'm going to have to do some checking. Going again in October hopefully.

Last trip (just 3 weeks ago) we flew for $600 for 3 of us (2 adult fare, 1 infant fare). That was the most we've ever paid for Delta. But 2 hours there and 2 hours back sure beats 32 hours rt driving!!

DJT- I dont know if anyone has already said this but... DH and I looked for the cheapest prices everywhere. (leaving from Louisville and Indy). We finally settled on Delta out of Louisville. We had to watch the prices really close and make a decision quickly when the prices were down. That was about a month ago. You may want to check and see what you find. I found that prices changed minute by minute.
Good luck.
Kris

All of Independence Airs flights from Louisville are routed through their hub at Dulles in D.C..... connections and flight times aren't bad though

I agree, Delta has always had the best times for non-stops from Louisville to MCO....but we always ahve 4 and sometimes 5 or 6 going....so if I can save $100/person and drive a little it adds up.... besides SW times going from SDF to MCO stink (mid day only...and we either want to go in the early AM and have as much of the day as possible...or leave after school/work in the evening, neither of which will work on SW and Delta has non stops both early AM and evening)...coming back to Louisville SW has twice as many options spread out over the whole day

Sometimes we just do a cheap 1 way car rental to Indy or Nashville and fly out of those places and fly back in to Louisville on SW and still get times we want at cheaper prices....

Of course if I added up all the time I spend looking for cheap airfare at work it probably wouldn't be so cheap after all!!
