Louisiana student has trouble with principal for wearing Colts jersey

It is a public school, and he KNEW he would get in trouble. Livingston school district has ZERO tolerance when it comes to breaking the rules. It is one of the many reasons our school district is rated one of the best in the state.

Adding to this for those not from Louisiana or who do not know:

When they say it's a PARISH school system it is because Louisiana doesn't have counties. It has parishes instead. Our "counties" were originally drawn over old church parish lines and thus called "parishes". ;)

Maybe it's because Maryland is such a mixing bowl (is that the right term?) but I don't think one can be "declared" Saints Nation, or Redskin Nation, or Ravens Nation. Just seems very controlling. Granted, I'm not a minor in a school-setting, but when the Ravens were in the play-offs facing the Colts, my workplace (I work for the state of Maryland) initially declared the Friday before as "Ravens Purple" day. That lasted about 1 hour and then we got a second email that it would actually be "team" day and you could wear your team's favorite jersey.

So here's a question: If that student had decided that he didn't want to support a "saints" day and just stayed home, would his absence be excused?

No. He would have worn his school uniform to school.

:thumbsup2 Sounds like a great day, I am sure your employees were very appreciative, I know I would have been.
That wasn't what the day was here and while maybe the entire state should do away with black and gold days in your mind, it won't happen .

Louisiana has a special bond with the Saints and this is one of the ways we show it.

What about those who don't? Surely not every single person living there supports the Saints? Suppose they have a son (let's say) that plays for another team, lol? Do they get flogged? Tarred and feathered? Humiliated? What??

It's a public school.

Feel free to exercise your free speech all you want, but if you broke the law while doing it you'd likely suffer the consequence.

I think we're all debating different things. The principal could have been more inclusive, but as it was the rule was uniform or black and gold. The student broke the rule. I think he should suffer the consequence of that.

Students aren't entitled to have a free dress day. A privilege (with rules) was offered. He had the choice to take it or not.

Back to my question that went ignored. If a principal offers free dress day for heart month, but the rule is students have to wear red, is he being non-inclusive of other colors? Sounds absurd, doesn't it?

Yeah--those civil rights activists suffered teh consequences, but the laws were changed as a result.

He broke the rule, he suffers the consequences. Now the ACLU gets to weigh in on whether or not his rights were violated.

Your question sounds absurd. I don't feel that this situation is absurd as it is completely different.

Yes we do all of those things ;)

LOL maybe ; )

They get teased and ribbed, just as others do who live in areas where the majority of the population are fans of another team.

I thought Archie Manning was treated really well by saints fans. :rotfl:

That is why I said district, wasn't sure that all would understand parishes .

Thanks, but if you think that your bond with the Saints is any stronger than mine for Bama - well, you are mistaken... ;)

I had always wondered why that is--but never really looked into it. Cool piece of trivia.

I had thought it had to do something with the Napolean code or whatever--from way back when. But never knew why that mattered.

We live in Indy and my kids go to a private school with a dress code. On Fridays during playoff season, the parents all got a note saying the kids could wear their Colts gear. Last Friday a boy wore a Saints jersey, and was asked to take it off, because he was out of the dress code for the day.

Speaking of dress codes...

My mom went to school at a time when girls in public school were not a allowed to wear pants.

I'm not sure how it was changed--but that certainly would not fly in a public school today.

Dress codes can change with the times and I'm sure they didn't do it out of the goodness of their hearts when they changed it to allowing girls to wear pants.

Sorry. Didn't mean to say you were wrong or anything. Just wanted to expand on what you were saying so the article was clear. I thought the article said Livingston Parish District. (Or maybe I'm just so used to hearing it that it's what I read...whether it said that or not....LOL!)

I used "Parish" in my post...perhaps I inspired you.;)

This parish is also one of the "Florida Parishes". But I'll et you look that one up on your own. ;)
