Louisiana student has trouble with principal for wearing Colts jersey

exactly!!! IMHO, this is about abuse of power and not knowing when to pick your battles! I know some people will make this about the principal maintaining respect, but when you are this petty (not allowing kids to show support for the other team) and when you choose to push back so hard on something so minor (in contrast to the issues educators are faced with) - then you just come off as more juvenile than the kids you teach and end up losing their respect! Yeah, the principal has the power, but it up to him to use it wisely...this is abuse of that power and a lack of common sense as far as picking his battles.

Again, I am so glad I am from an area where this kind of nonsense isn't the norm!
Again, I'm glad I'm from an area where rules are respected. If the administration in "your area's" solution is to ignore rules so they don't seem juvenile, I'm glad you live there too. Obviously you haven't spent much time in education if you think discipline and behavior aren't directly linked to classroom success. He knew he was going to break the rules and bragged about it. IMO he got off easy just having to change shirts.

How & when is it abuse of power to show support for your own state's team? :confused3 We had a ticker tape parade when the Yankees won. Many of downtown Manhattan's streets had to be closed for it and money was spent on extra police presence. I guess it was the Mayor's "abuse of power" to have it. And of course, it was "all about him" as he was there to give the Keys of the City to the Yankees.

No, the abuse of power would be arresting participants wearing Mets uniforms... ;)

Yes, I did. We disagree. Move on. Why can't people on this board disagree respectfully? :rolleyes1
Because your whole argument was based on it being a support your favorite team day, and it was never that. I wasn't disrespectful in my comments. You didn't seem to understand what the rules were that day and it was spelled out clearly in the article.

Disrespectful would have been acting superior and trashing a whole area because you don't agree with how a principal handled a discipline problem.

Not to get nitpicky--but NFL teams are city franchises. Florida has three teams--why? I do not know.

As for the Mayor--I don't think he would have turned a blind eye if it were the Mets.

Just so I understand you...... if a student asks if something would be allowed beforehand and is told no and chooses to knowingly do something he was told was unacceptable, everyone should just ignore said student's disobedience?

All kids are different.... I have one that if I let her get away with something (no matter how small or trivial someone may think it is), watch out. She will start to push and defy over and over again. I think when dealing with a large number of students, you need to do the same. Also, we don't know this student, he may be like my dd.

Of course, the end result is that this will put an end to these sort of "casual" days from here on out. How sad for everyone involved.

What, am I stupid or are you just a genius? We disagree about what was happening here. It is that simple. And now you feel like you have to win this "argument". Too funny... :rotfl:

That's not considered cheating? Giving one state 3 teams and 3 chances to win? (You can tell I'm not a football person.)

It is all about who has to most money to start franchise. If you have the money, you can start it where you want i guess.
Doesnt happen often, new expansion teams change playoff odds and dilutes the talent pool.

Actually,New York only has one NFL team, the Buffalo Bills. The Jets and Giants play in New Jersey.

He didn't just have to change shirts - he had to listen to his principal tell him he should maybe move back to Indiana - which the principal admitted he 'shouldn't have said' ...

If the principal was a professional, he would have disciplined the boy for breaking dress code, and not made such an inflammatory comment. Was the student innocent? No. But he's not a high school principal, either.

Methinks that the principal's comment is what made the father so angry, and thus brought all the attention onto this story.

I'm not a genius and I don't think you're stupid. I thought we were having a discussion, not an argument. You posted your opinion and I posted why I thought your opinion was flawed. You're free to do the same. It's that simple. Nothing more (at least not on my side).

This is the way that I read it, too. This isn't about the kid wearing that shirt, though it could have been. It is about the juvenile behavior of the principal. And that behavior makes one question everything about the event, including his decision to not be inclusive of Colts fans...

I'm sure that will scar him for life. If he'd done that after being told no in our school, he would have faced detention or worse.

He bragged about doing it before Friday, so he knew he was starting something. Methinks this kid is a discipline problem, and his father likely had the ACLU and media on speed dial.

Anyway, I agreed that the principal was out of line. Not debating (or arguing ;) ) that point.

Well, then according to ilovejack's info, it's New York money that funds the two teams. :rolleyes1 :duck: ;)
