Lots of Airline Voucher Questions

If you've ever gotten an airline voucher because an airfare has gone down, have you always ended up actually using it?? Or have you made a trip just to use them? Are there restrictions on them, besides the one year limit? (Sometimes you get TWO years??)

Except for a recent trip to California, the only place we really fly to is Orlando. If I got a voucher because this coming November's airfare goes down on the tickets I already have, I most likely wouldn't be flying again until the following November, to Orlando. That's beyond the one year to use the voucher.

Also, if the price goes down and you get a voucher, and it goes down again and you get another voucher, can you combine those two vouchers, or do you now need to use them on two different flights?

Is there a minimum price difference to be able to get a voucher, ie, has to drop at least "X" dollars before a voucher will be issued?

One more ;) ...are the vouchers issued in the names of each of the passengers, and will a particular voucher need to be used only for a particular passenger?

Thanks. :D

1. the name of the person on each voucher has to be the one to use it. they have in certain instances allowed you to use it to pay for someone elses ressie. but you must get the override from a supervisor in order to do so.
2. if you get the refund voucher to use and its now for next november then the best I can suggest is that you buy the tkt right before it expires.
3. I have 3 vouchers from Usair and one from Delta and not one of them says anywhere on it that you can nly use one at a time. so in feb when I go to the CCSS ladies meet I will use 2 of mine together to pay for my tkt. (2 usair at a time) my DL one will expire as I have no need to fly DL>
4. you get vouchers for the fare reduction, poor customer svc, a goodwill gesture, a cancelled or delayed flight, etc. it could be for a number of things.
5. I believe the fare difference needs to be 5 or more. I could be wrong but thats what it used to be.
6. I use my vouchers for trips I want to take. I know specifically when I want to go so I don't take a trip just to use the vouchers before they expire.
7. I have seen reservations where people have gotten 2-3 vouchers per ressie for fare reduction. some of the carriers are getting more restrictive now with giving just one fare reduction per PNR. so I guess it depends on when you call and who you speak to at the time. some agents will give it and others won't.

Let me know if I answered everything you wanted to know! This concludes vouchers 101! LOL

I think you answered all my questions, BL, but I have another one. heehee ;)

Let's say I have tickets for November (I do); if there is a fare reduction today, and I get vouchers, is the one year from today, or from when the ticket was originally for...November?

Many thanks, BL!

I believe some airlines allow vouchers to be transferred. United is one, for instance. Delta, on the other hand, makes it very clear that the voucher is *not* transferable.

Just be sure to ask when you talk to someone on the phone.

this is a great site for questions like this (I just hope it wraps properly):

that link never wraps properly! LOL
the ones I have are good from date of issue. it was issued may 9th and is good till next may. I have one issued jun 6th and is good till next jun 6th. those are the usair ones and the DL one is the same way. in fact it expires the 15th of this month. (It was good for 2 yrs)

related question, my bf and i had some DL vouchers which i used to pay for our upcoming Labor day flights.

we had leftover money on the vouchers, about $100, and the ticketing agent gave us a receipt saying how much we had left.

but the original date of issue on vouchers was Nov 2000, w/ expiration of Nov 2001.

now the new receipt says the remaining $100 doesn't expire until Nov 2002!

is that a mistake? or is this standard practice?

When something similar happened to me (leftover "voucher" credit), I also got a year from the time I used the first part of the voucher to use up the rest. It was with NWA.

I have also used more than one voucher to pay for one ticket, but NWA would not let me use one voucher to pay for more than one ticket. That's how I ended up with the "extra" $$ on my voucher and got the year extension.

I once also used my SIL's voucher to pay for my daughter's ticket without any problem. There was a place for my SIL to sign it, though, so at least that voucher was transferable. This was again on NWA and also about 2 years ago. Possible things have changed since.

I ask as politely as I can - you just never know. The worst that can happen is they say no and give you an explanation that helps in the future.

MaryAnn:

I notice you are from N.E. (we are from CT) and are flying in Nov. (We are, too!). May I ask what fare you got and which airline? I am in a quandary and have til tomorrow to decide if I should book a fare for $177.50 rt. I would prefer to fly with JetBlue (where we now have a voucher and loved their planes/service, etc), but Delta had the best deal. I'm afraid fares will only go up. Any suggestions?

P.S. We are DVC members, too!
