OK - I did some searching on the website
http://lost.cubit.net/ and found that Kate's bio-Dad and Desmond's hatch partner (whose name is Kelvin) are NOT the same person. Here is a copy & paste of what lost.cubit.net says about Kelvin Inman. He is the arny guy connected to Sayid who trained Sayid to torture.
Inman appeared to have been a CIA Operative working in Iraq during the Gulf War (he later says "I was a spook for 10 years"). When
Sayid was captured in Kuwait, Inman called himself Joe and used Sayid in order to get information from Sayid's commanding officer,
Tariq. Inman showed Sayid a video of Tariq using Sarin gas on a village in Iraq which Sayid's relatives lived in. By doing so, he convinced Sayid to torture Tariq in order to find out where a missing US pilot was located (that was believed to have been captured by Tariq). Sayid was successful in obtaining the information, and was later released by Inman because the Americans are moving out of Iraq, since Sadam is back in power. Inman told him, "Guess you're lucky you have a new skill set you can use... One of these days there will be something you need to know. And now you know how to get it." Sayid vowed never to use means of torture again. Inman gave him "bus fare" back to Ramaldi and left in the convoy with
Sergeant Sam Austen.
At some point, Inman was hired by
DHARMA to work in the
Swan. He worked for some time with a partner who he called
Radzinsky. According to Inman, it was Radzinsky's idea to use detergent to start the
blast door map, and also to rewire to force a
lockdown procedure. Inman later related that Radzinsky shot himself and commited suicide, and he was the lone Swan operator for an unknown period of time.
According to
Desmond, when he was stranded on the island 3 years ago, Inman came running out of the jungle. He brought him back inside the hatch and taught him how to push the button every 108 minutes. He told Desmond his first name was Kelvin. Over the years, he passed down many of Radzinsky's secrets to Desmond, and also taught him about the
failsafe key.
Kelvin perpetuated the idea that there was a
sickness outside the station, and refused to let Desmond go exploring. He went outside from time to time in a biohazard suit, but one day, Desmond followed him. After he saw him take the suit off, Desmond confronted him, and Inman admitted he had lied to him. He showed Desmond that he had plans to leave the island after repairing
Desmond's boat, and just needed someone around to push the button. In anger, Desmond fought him, and hit his head against a rock. Desmond believes he killed him.
