Lost Luggage through ME???

I've never read a post on this or any other board stating that the writer's own luggage was totally and forever lost by DME. Now, that doesn't mean it's never happened, I'm just saying I've never read about it.

the only post that I recall reading was 'katypop' from last year - her friend's luggage never showed up after a week, and the resort did give them some money to buy clothes.

I don't know if they were ever able to determine if ME or Air Canada lost the luggage, however, and I don't know if it ever did turn up at all ie after they returned home.

I will advise you that luggage is usually very very rarely 'lost' - even though you hear passengers using that term. If anything, it is 'delayed' ie it shows up a few hours or a few days later.

In 15 years of very very frqeuent travel my luggage was delayed twice by a few hours (on my homeward trip) and the only serious delay was when I moved from Germany and British Airways misplaced my luggage for 3 days. Again, that's pretty rare for such a long delay.

FWIW, my company requires that we travel in business attire (used to be business professional all the way down to hoisery) for exactly that reason ie delayed luggage - the thought is that at least we will be dressed to meet clients. And for the same reason, posters here recommend takign some essentials in your carryon.

I cannot rule out luggage outright stolen by a CM, but the vast majority of lost luggage problems are with the airlines. For the most part, DME guests who don't get their luggage file a claim at the resort and Disney does the rest.

Airlines must love DME because it drastically reduces having couriers deliver delayed luggage to WDW.

DME scans luggage 5 times between entering thier control and entering your room. They always know where the luggage is.

They handle tens of thousands of bags per day, so it's not impossible to lose a bag, but it's very highly improbable.

We used Magical Express the VERY first day it was operating! By 4pm we had 5 of our 6 bags in our room. We called over and over througout the week but the 6th bag was never found. To this day we don't know whether it was a ME issue or airline (northwest). We had to buy clothing of course and Disney reimbursed us for this. They also gave us a credit at the gift shop to buy toiletries. They also offered to pay for a taxi to take us to a local mall. It wasn't the biggest deal, but it was definitely not a fun thing to be dealing with on vacation. Since this I have used Magical Express 3 times and will gladly use it again. With the exception of the first time I have had nothing but wonderful experiences. I LOVE it. It is a wonderful service and I really think this was a total fluke and I suspect it was an airline error.

We used ME on our trip last December, and although it went fine on the way to WDW, I had a luggage problem on my way back. Nothing terrible, but when we got on the ME bus at POFQ to head back to MCO, my DH made sure all of our bags got put on the bus. When we got off the bus, my bag wasn't there anymore. We informed the driver, he looked in the bus's luggage compartment again and said it was empty...then he LEFT! My DH said that probably someone had grabbed my bag by mistake thinking it was theirs (black rolling luggage is VERY common). Also, we had several very large parties on the bus with us who were getting 15-20 suitcases at a time, so more than likely, that is what happened. I was really upset, but as soon as we got back to Houston, I called Mears to let them know what happened. My bag "turned up" within 24 hours and they FedEx'ed it to me overnight (which must have cost like $100, as I am not known for packing light!). It all worked out fine in the end, I was just glad it happened on the way home instead of on the way there...
So I guess the moral of the story is...buy VERY DISTINCTIVE luggage so no one mistakes it for their own! I am now the proud owner of a leopard-print suitcase. :rolleyes1
